OT- Yaz for birth control???

My OB has given me an RX for Yaz.  I have seen the commercials for it and was concerned about the fact that it can interfer with potassium levels .   I  voiced my concerrns to the doc and he dismissed them saying such a small number of people have those issues.

OK.  So I took the samples and RX and left.

But when I googled Yaz I am reading horror stories....  As the commercial said it may help with "PMDD"  (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder) but these stories are of it making women with no PMDD worse....mood wise, emotionally, depression, etc.

I don't suffer from PMDD and my PMS is slight..... (a little cramping, chocolate cravings and a little bit of *****iness) but nothing I'd want to medicate for!

Any one here use it / prescribe it / have knowledge of it?

Since I already malabsorb am I at greater risk of potassium problems with Yaz?  What about the emotional aspect?

I was thinking of calling my OB and asking for Ortho LO instead....

(I used to take Demulan before WLS -- but it's a real strong BC and probably too much for me now that I've lost weight.)

Thanks for any input!

Cindy

I hated Yaz....I had my period for weeks until I stopped it. My 15 year old who has terrible cramps and some bad PMS also had a period for like 3 weeks! That was just my experience with it!

I hated YAZ as well and I DO have PMDD. For some reason I am sensitive to BC anyways and most make me extremely moody. I am getting an IUD this time but if I didnt I was going with Ortho Lo just like you said.

I had a horrible experience with YAZ...my sister also had a very bad time nearly lost her marriage because of loss of libido and very moody...she was an absolute monster on it. I had another friend who is still on it but has had libido issues on it too...

I switched to Ortho Tri Cyclen and it was just as bad...maybe i am just extra sensitive to BC...I know after the baby is here we will be using some type of barrier method so I don't have to deal with medicine!

I was on Yasmin and like it. The Yaz commerical scares me- too many negatives.

Cindy, are you sure you want to use a BC pill? With the amount we malabsorb (even RnYers) I was told that pills are not realiable.  My OB has suggest NuvaRing.

Cindy,

I agree with someone below as well. I used Nuvaring for 2 years and had no problems or side effects, it was so easy. Maybe you could look into it.

I used Yaz for a while before I was trying to get pregnant and I also hated it!  I was literally sick to my stomach every day!  I had a loss of libido also which caused a lot of troubles before we figured out what it was.  I just wasn't myself at all on it!  I also used Ortho Tri Cyclen...hated it also!  Same thing...sick ALL the time!!
This is the first time I have been on birth control since having Aethyn...and I am trying NuvaRing...I have only had it since Monday, so we shall see how it goes.  I was going to go with an IUD, but since we are unsure about when/if we want more kids (most likely we do....unless something majorly unexpected happens in our life)....We decided to go this route!  Hope you find something that works for you....everyone is different!

I agree with a prior post....are you sure you want to go the pill route?
