Deliverance
That's the tune that played in my husband's and my mind yesterday. We are looking to buy some land up in the mountains near the university but in the woods. I now have a full-time position and am making a lot of money and we decided to buy land. Well, he found what he thought would be perfect, so after we dropped our grandkids off at their mom's, we took the long way home. We ended up going off the highway (big mistake). We drove down roads that had huge bolders in the middle, low water bridges that weren't bridges at all, and by the time we arrived at the exact spot that was where the land was, we decided that this was too far out. But, our direction finder couldn't get us out and as luck we have it, we were so far out that there were no communication tower signals, so our phones were useless too. We drove north, thinking we will hit a highway soon. Not so because our tire blew out. Well, dh gets the jack out, and realizes that the manufactuer or the dealer didn't put the lugnut key in. So, he couldn't remove the tire. Deer were walking out of the woods looking at us and, I'm sure, laughing their asses off. I had to pee so bad and dh said just squat and I kept thinking of the movie deliverance all those hill folks and said, really, I don't want to, but finally, I had no choice. We walked hours both ways, trying to get a phone signal. Finally, we went back to the car and out of nowhere a kid on a dirt bike shows up. He says, you folks need a hand; dh explained our predicament. He, said, I'll go call the game and fish folks and they'll come help you out. Sure enough, here comes a ranger, he takes hubby to the nearest highway where he finally got a signal. The kids mom drove down from her house and offered to drive me back up to their house, I said, I'm fine, but she went back and brought me a diet coke and a sandwich, and stayed with me till dh got back. Roadside service made it an hour later and he took us to his shop and there he changed the tire for us. In all total, what should have taken about an hour, took us close to sixteen. So, late last night, dh called the place we bought the car, and talked to their hotline folks; the manager called us back and couldn't have been more apologetic. Today, he sent a guy over to carry our car to the dealership and they are putting four new tires on--free, changing the oil, and cleaning off all the dirt. The manager said that the key must have been misplaced the last time we had our tires rotated--they are the only ones who have ever even used the key, so they had to have lost it. In fact, we have never used the trunk otherthan to put our luggage or groceries in. So, our search for land ended up with another huge X on areas we don't want to consider. But, the kid who found us and his mom sure were nice.

Well dang, now I have that song in my head! Isn't that just the way Arkansans are? So willing to help (mostly) and they don't know many strangers.
So very happy to hear you've earned a full time position. It's been a long haul, but one certainly worth it. Good luck on finding that plot of dirt.....and getting that car taken care of!

Jeanne,
What a story, glad things worked out and as for the land, as you said, you now know where you don't want to buy it and you got four new tires out of the deal, so I'd say the day wasn't a total loss.
Hugs, Laureen
