I am 56 and am getting ready to have a revision from lapband to rny. I am at 210 and would like to get to at least 130. I am 5'4". My kids are giving me a bad time and  don't want me to do this surgery they think I will look worse because of my age and losing so much weight that I will look older and more saggy. I was wondering how everyone does at this age as far as how your skin adjust to your weight loss.

I am 55, 5'4, and started at 258 lbs.

I would have told you that my dream would be a goal weight of 130 ish, but my body has had other plans and has settled in at about 155. Yes, I'd still like to lose 5-7 more lbs., but overall I am very happy with my health, my clothing size, and how I look (at least with clothes on!) I have not weighed 130 since about 1980 - and I guess the metabolism has changed in these intervening years!

As for the sagginess...genetics and the amount you wish to lose play a big role in this. I believe that a strong exercise program helps, because you tone the muscles under the skin. I have done pretty well on legs, arms, butt, back, and breasts. My belly, however, looks something like the face of a shar pei. Ultimately I will probabably get a tummy tuck, but for now I feel great about my overall progress.

Hi and welcome to OFF,

You are in the lightweight category for this surgical procedure, each persons journey is different and age can play into it, mainly due to what we have done to our metabolism's via yo-yo dieting, some people get all the way to their goal weight, my surgeon suggested that I might want to establish a reasonable goal because the insurance charts were not realistic to me.  I choose 150 and she concurred that would be reasonable, I got as low as 156, but not for long, I rebounded to 164/5 where I can say I was happy, but this past year I got off track, stopped exercising and some form of it is a must for us, and gained an additiona 15 lbs., of which I am happy to say that going back to the gym and getting rid of the bad carbs has helped me lose 2 lbs. so far.  As for skin, well sweetie, at 56 our skin is not as resilient, but as Lynn stated, genes play a part and while I'd love to have a tummy tuck and mini face/neck lift, I can live with what is, beause I am living life in a manner that I was unable to for a very long time, due to my size.

As for your kids, let me say this, my daughters were on board for what I did (I was 52) and my son, not so much, but in the end they all agreed it was good, now they don't like my hair, which I let grow out to natural state, due to allergies to dying and what it was doing to my scalp.  You know what, while I love my children, I must be happy with my decisions and choices, happiness is contagious, so make yourself happy, you children will be swept up in that, they are probably just worried that something might happen to you because they love you . . .

Best wishes, Laureen
