Take Action

Take Action

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:31 AM PDT

When push comes to shove – it’s action that causes you to lose or gain weight. As in, it's a choice to eat that cookie (action) or not eat that cookie (a different action).

The other day, I was reading a great manifesto by Guy Kawasaki called The Art of the Start. He is a big proponent of implementation. Get it done – it doesn’t have to be pretty or perfect, your first job is to bring your vision into being (or in our case – doing).
In another recent reading, the author was suggesting the key to behavior change is to change your behavior (duh!). But really, it is as simple as that. Change your eating behavior when you walk into the break room. Don’t eat the first cookie if you don’t really want it. You don’t have to say no to all cookies – just having a first one.

Sometimes, I think we all get overwhelmed by the big picture.  When really, it is as simple as acting in ways consistent with your goal.  If the big picture is overwhelming, don't think about it -- just think about this eating decision and then next one.  That's only two.  You can handle two decisions! No excuses.  Just get it done.

Good morning DebbieJean, thanks for posting this.  I needed this VERY badly this morning.  I need to remember that with our addiction/s, it's not a day by day journey but a meal by meal or moment by moment journey.  That helps when remembered.

Have a wonderful day!!

Hugs Cindy and yes sometimes it is moment by moment for some of us. That would be me if I have turmoil in my life...emotional eating doesn't go away. Learning with baby steps and saying to myself "no food will fill this hole, even my pouch" when I want to comfort myself.

Some tips for people who are emotional eaters:
Call a friend
Take a walk
Put a flavored tooth pick in your mouth, make them and carry them with you in your pocket.

When things are out of control in our lives we reach for food...at least I do. Ugh!
Knowing we are not alone is something to reflect on.

Hi Debbiejean:

I just had to comment on your post, even though I'm posting from work and it's very likely that Big Brother is watching.   I have been following your posts for a long time now, but not responding because it's not allowed from work.  However, school is out and I am working on my own time to tie up some loose ends, so Big Brother can stick it.

Your posts are very inspirational and I look forward to them every day, even if I'm not able to reply.

Today's is particularly fitting, as I have been working toward the same conclusion for a couple of months (Joined OA and embarked on a journey of HONEST self discovery and BS elimination :-).  OA's 'just for today' motto really works for me

Anyway, there is a lady in my group who seems a little wacky, but she has been at goal for like 8 years, so I have been listening to everything she says.  Here is the best advice I heard from her:   "Talk to the food."  She talks to the unhealthy foods telling them how she loves them, but they do not love her back, so she is giving them up.   She equates it to giving up a toxic boyfriend.   I have started talking to food EVERYWHERE:  the grocery store, restaurants, friends' houses, etc.  The main thing it to keep from taking any of the offending goodies home.

Gotta go.  Have a great day,

María

Maria, you made me smile with the "Talk to the Food"!
Well you gotta admit sometimes food "calls to us" and this gal just reversed her thinking. I love it!
Have a great day! Debbie

Early on I discovered that I wasn't hungry but my mouth wanted something. The solution that works for me is to go brush my teeth.

Brushing TeethIt helps keep me away from food and you can't brush too often.

I use the brush your teeth too. I even wore a mask when I was baking cookies for church. Amazing how much batter got on my mask! LOL
You gotta do what you gotta do to get you through! Hugs to you annette!

WOW Debbiejean,
I just read and commented on your previous post and I said I feel overwhelmed with the fact that I still have over 100 pounds to lose. Then I read this one. I've definitely let myself get caught up in the big picture lately. Must start looking at a smaller picture of making good decisions for right now, for this moment in time.     Hugs,   Mag

Hugs right back at you Mag. You will lose those 100 pounds, just gotta take baby-steps and they all add up. Really...all of us or most of us had over 100 pounds to lose, isn't that overwhelming thought...I must lose 100 pounds by some certain date? It took me over 2 years to lose weight and I actually got down to a size 4 with exercise. Now I can't exercise like I did 2 years ago...life set in and I will admit I did 3 hours of exercise, not all at once...1 hour in the morning, 1 hour during my lunch/breaks and 1 hour after I got done with work and it was to the gym! I can't do that anymore...yep, life set in! LOL
Now I'm accepting my body (for now) at a nice wonderful size 12, will I get into size 8's again? Don't know...no one can predict the future but maybe in time I will get back into size 8's and if I do it's shopping at the Thrift Shops for smaller clothes. I purged my closet of my size 4, 6, and 8's. It was depressing to me to see those clothes not being worn...so I detoxed my closet!

Hey Debbie,
I am just reading this today, and have to share that is exactly what I did yesterday.  I was in training for my new job Monday and Wednesday, and the hospital provided us with coffee and donuts in the morning.  On Monday, I impulsively ate a donut, even though I had eaten breakfast already.  Wednesday, I packed a cereal I like to eat, dry, and was tempted to reach for the chocolate frosted donut, but reminded myself of my decision to eat the packed cereal instead of the donut.  I felt proud of myself for resisting that donut.

The philosophy of not eating the first donut is very similar to AA's philosophy.  We remind ourselves that we cannot get drunk if we don't pick up the first drink, because that is the one that will get us drunk.  In my case that is literally what happens, but for an alcoholic, the first drink is the one that gets us in trouble, so we avoid the first one.

Thanks for faithfully posting this.

Hugs,
Trish
