Protein Absorbtion Question

So I'm sitting here  - at work - thinking....... (dangerous I know)

If people who have had WLS absorb Whey Isolate Protein better than other sources.....  what happens to protein we consume and is not absorbed?  Is it a problem for our kidneys?  Does it just pass through so to speak?

This was a distraction because I have a project on my desk and I don't want to tackle it this afternoon.  I was in a 3-hour meeting this morning and I think I'm a little 'brain challenged' right now.

Just wonderin'......  Thanks very much.

i do not have the answer- sorry! but that is a very good question!
(gold star!!) --i would think it passes thru--i asked once about how much we actually
DO absorb vs how much we maybe should be drinking --i mean-ok- if we are striving for say 75 grams of protein--how much protein do we actually need to consume to get that???

kathi-it is soooooooooooooooooo good to see you post!!!!!!
hugs!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Kathy, good question,my NUT said no more than 20 at a time. I hear the rest spills and get pee'd out,no harm.
Hugs, nice to see you here too.
I know that people who bought those protein bullets were disappointed because their docs said they were not consuming enough protein.

My doctor actually recommends those bullets, so I don't think there is a hard and fast answer to these questions. Maybe the doctors don't even know for sure.  I've also heard from nutritionists that once protein is heated to 120* it is no good to us. Not everyone agrees with that though, since many cook the protein into cookies, etc. I'd sure like to get a good answer about protein from a real expert. It would be a shame to be spending the money for nothing.

i honestly dont think anyone has the "right" answer.  like many of our food and medical issues in the world, i think the debate about this will go on and on.

there are so many variables, that without a controlled scientific study. i dont think these absorption questions can be answered with any real certainty.

thats my five cents worth.

i think we just all need to stay on top of our issues and work at staying as healthy as we possibly can.

be safe and well, jacki

Kathi,

As everyone said, it's a great question and the answer is also as they said, don't even think the doctors know for sure, which is why the are "practicing" medicine. . .  some better than others.

I really think it's up to you body. Everyone reactly differently to medication so I would think its the same with food and drinks. I think if your labs say you are doing great on protein keep with what you have been doing. Like my Doctor told me if it ain't broke don't fix it.
I just got my lab results yesterday and all labs were good. I do add protein to some foods but not everything. I still drink protein hot chocolate and protein cappuccinos. Every now and then a shake. I do use it when I make protein bar squares or protein cookies. But I feel we absorb at least 1/2 of the protein we intake at a time.
Well, that's my opinion. Whether it be correct or not, I'm not sure.
If labs are good then you are doing the right thing. Right?
