My name is Val.  I moved to WA from SC 6months ago.  I've been lurking on the lapband board.  I met my surgeon last weeks and will be starting my 6 month MD supervised diet soon.  I won't be having surgery until December. (The surgery idea scares my DH to death).  I am 53.  I am still on the fense between lapband and RNY.  I am wanting good results in clearing up my diabetes.

Welcome Val.  I'm glad that you came to visit us.  After my RNY last Aug., I no longer have diabetes.  I'm sure others here can answer any questions that you might have.  There are a lot of RNY'ers and Lapband'ers on this forum.  I hope you stay around and chat with us.  Oh, and I am 56, surgery when I was 55.
Take care and big hugs,
Pat A

Val, I can pretty much eat anything that I want.  But, I just make wiser choices with my food now.  I keep track of what I eat by using thedailyplate.com at livestrong.com each day.  You can even do that now, you don't have to wait for your surgery.  Of course, I eat smaller portions, but I really don't get hungry.  I also cook differently now, as I was born and raised in KY we most always fried things, but I don't do that anymore.  I've worked very hard since I've had surgery to lose what I have.  But, I want to.  My energy level is thru the roof now.  I exercise daily, I didn't have the energy or desire to do that before surgery.
I wish you much success.
And yes, there is a great group of ladies and men on this forum that are always willing to help you.

Aloha Val...and welcome to the OFF (Over Fifty Forum).....

You have a great adventure ahead of you, and if you stick around in here you will hear so many success stories as well as making wonderful friends and getting lots of great advice.

You are just a "baby" at 53!! I had surgery at 62, 2.5 years ago, and my life has changed dramatically in what I can do. I feel about 35 and can move like I did at 35........run up stairs, get down on the floor, etc. etc.

I have a friend who had diabetes and had RNY...she is totally without any signs of diabetes and was almost immediately after surgery off all meds for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Good luck to you and glad to have you here.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

 Hi Val,

I live here in Puyallup WA....  I had surgery last March at Madigan AMC.  I wish I had known about the surgery years before.  I fought tooth and nail NOT to have surgery.  I  didn't want to have major surgery just to lose weight.  Now, I'm so glad I had it done.  There are always risks with any surgery but the quality of life has improved dramatically.  My Dr does not do the lap band so I didn't have much of a choice.  I wanted him to go in, take care of whatever needed to be done and get it over with.  Diabetes, high cholestrol, blood pressure and all the little achey things are gone.  I feel so much better.

So, off the fence and begin to live again.

I too started out thinking Lapband but ended up with Lap RNY. I have no regrets other then I wish I would have done it years ago!!!!  I lost 121 pounds and weigh 121 pounds.
I am so healthy and can do things I never thought I would do again.

I wish you well on this remarkable journey!!!
