AREN'T THERE ANY 50+ BANDERS ON THIS SITE?
Hi Katherine B,
I was 54 when I had my lap-band surgery. I am now 56 and down 93 pounds ( I'll update my ticker when I hit 100 pounds down). Sometimes the slower loss as compared to the RNYers gets a bit disheartening, but then I know I'm going in the right direction, making small permanent changes that I can live with. I didn't get fat quickly and am getting more and more fit daily. I now teach Zumba Gold 3 times a week and work out in the Weight Room twice a week, as well as attend 2 regular Zumba classes. I feel great and can wear button Lee jeans for the first time in over 25 years. I love my lap-band!
Hope this helps!

Hi k,
I've read through all the responses you got and I think I'm the oldest. 73 my last birthday, had my surgery three weeks ago, and have lost 16 lbs so far. Of course I've got a long way to go but I feel in control with my lapband and have complete faith that I can achieve my goal. If the weight loss continues at about 2 lbs a week, I should be at my goal by the end of this year. Not so bad. I'm pushing to get my exercise up to a full half hour daily (ride my bike and walk the dogs) but here in the Canadian west, it rains a lot in the winter so dog walking sometimes gets skipped.
Since both of my folks lived well into their nineties (my aunt will be 100 in August) I expect my time on earth being slim will make it all worth while!
By the way, over fifties might have more problem getting our skin to shrink so slow loss is probably a bonus!!!

Hi Marilyn,
Very good point about that it may be good to lose slowly in order for our bodies and skin to hopefully adjust to the loss. I'm 55, banded on 29 Dec 09 and have lost 20 pounds now. I'm taking little bitty red krill oil capsules twice a day and hope that besides being good for my heart that they'll help my skin. It's likely too early to tell at only 20 pounds.
Congratulations on your courage, optimism and love for your health to have WLS at 73. That's wonderful. I'm looking forward to reaching 57 at a healthy weight. I hope to be as motivated as you are when I'm 73 too.
I too notice that the RNY folks seem to have excellent results very quick and while that sure sounds marvelous and yes it's easy to wish for the same quick results ... we too can reach our goals. I love my lapband and appreciate it as a tool and for the sense of control that it gives me.
Best wishes for 2009!

Hi, Donna - I got 3 ccs in my first fill (14 cc Lapband) and I go tomorrow for my second.
Not counting first 2 weeks after operation and the 3 days(Jan 24) my first fill lasted ,I've had no
restriction. all along.
BUT I am re-thinking things. I am losing weight at about 1-l/2 pounds a week. From reading
and LISTENING to everyone on this wonderful site, it seems to me that the tightening (filling)
has to be gradual and since I'm leery about being too tight - I will be happy with a 2cc fill
tomorrow. This time I'm really going to talk to the phys asst about this.
I follow all the band rules and never get to the point of overeating - I look forward to restriction
- which after all is the POINT OF GETTING A LAPBAND - but I'm not going to demand more fill
to get there quicker (and probably be sick and get all those unpleasant side effects.)
Good luck in your journey - and keep reading and listening to the wonderful ladies on this site -
it has really helped me tremendously. We were given no indication pre-surgery that we would
ever need a tightening (or a fill). I thought the operation was it - done - finito.
Thanks,
Katherine B
