Never a dull moment. Hunter in hospital

Sunday I told DD to call doctor first thing Monday morning as Hunter was very jaundice. She did, went for a blood test. The doctor said I don't like the look of his small head, I am sending you to Children's hospital to see a specialist. In the meantime the bilirubin results came back sky high, (over 30, I am not sure what is normal but I am putting results in the computer right now for one of our clients where he was put in the hospital with a bilirubin of 12) so doc says admit here or at Childrens? Liz says here ( Creighton) little guy is put under the lights. Last evening a gaggle of specialists come in to see him. they went on and on and ON about all the horrible bacterias or virus' that Liz could have passed to Hunter that could damage his brain, they were going to do all these tests, do a lumbar puncture.. start him on antibiotics and anti virals..just in case, would stop them if all was well. Inside I kept saying no no no, this is not right, they have no justification to do all this invasive stuff to this tiny little guy( his weight is down to 5# 3oz) and altho tiny he looks very good, I have enough medical background, especially with babies .They leave. Liz and Ray are just exhausted, I told them to go home and I would stay with the baby. Nurse says no they have to be there to give permission for the lumbar puncture. Within 2 hours the gaggle troops back into the room. One of the  students in a burst of wisdom had gone to the NICU and got a growth chart for a premature infant. DUH !! They didn't know he was born at 36 weeks!!! they were comparing him to a full term infant  and he was off the charts on the small side!!!  When tracted on the right chart he was 50% in length, and 10% in head size and weight. Small but with in the normal range. The @#$%^& idiots. They almost did all this stuff for no @#%^&* reason !!!!
So then they said, we see no reason to do all these tests. Well THANK-YOU. So I did get Liz and Ray to go home and sleep the night, and I stayed with Hunter, who ate and slept like a champ all night, this morning his bilirubin is down to 14 and they may send him home..Like I said, never a dull moment

Do  they still suggesting putting a baby in the sun for a while in a window or sliding glass door to help with his jaundice??
That is what they did in the old days.. Keep in touch and let us know how Hunter is doing..Best wishes !!!!

Jean,

So sorry to hear the trauma of what you and your family endured.  It's so sad today that doctors put such fear into people for what usually turns out to be no good reason, it's become all about them covering their own you know what.  I guess the good news is that sweet Hunter has jaundice, which is not so very abnormal and nothing a little extra sunlight won't help!

Hugs and best wishes for Hunter to grow and soon be no resemblance to "preemie" whatsoever.

I have no clue what you are talking about... However, I'm glad you do.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers too.  Sweet little Hunter has a good gramma to be there with him.  Millie

Thank God that someone in that group had the brains God gave a goose! I hate to think of the suffering that poor Hunter would have to have gone through just because someone didn't think to check a bit further. It is a scary thing when you see things like that happen. Like Laureen said, they all have to make sure they have their bee hinds covered.

I am glad that things are working out for Hunter. I am sorry for the things that you and Liz and Ray had to go through. I am keeping you all in my prayers. Please keep us posted on how things are going.
