Margaret....I am so sorry they are messing with you on this surgery issue. You  have enough comorbidities...I don't understand the problem.
I also was on Ibuprofen daily before surgery. Since surgery I am almost completely pain free. It is something to think about.
I would be in a wheelchair today if I hadn't fought and fought to get this surgery. Don't give up....keep appealing!!

Hugs...connie d

Thanks for the encouragement.  I think that I have stopped feeling sorry for myself now LOL and I am ready to fight.
Margaret
I really appreciate your, and others, encouragement.  I don't think that I could do this on my own without my family on OFF.

Hi Margaret,

I'm so sorry to hear about your problems and your pain. I completely understand. 2.5 years ago I needed a total hip replacement and desperately wanted WLS but I was not heavy enough (even though I couldn't walk). I went from being 50 pounds overweight to 75 pounds almost overnight when I couldn't exercise at all because of my pain...I tried to get my orthopedic doctor to authorize WLS but he wouldn't saying, "you're not that fat". I returned to my PCP and he noticed I had gained a lot of weight and I begged him for WLS at which time he gave me a referral to enter their program which would begin in 3 months to start a supervised diet for 6 months.

I was so excited to finally have the authorizion to enter the program only to find out that I didn't meet the criteria, since I too had a BMI between 35-40 and no co-mobities. I caluculated that I would only need to gain another 25 pounds to qualify; I had gained and lost those 25 pounds hundreds of times in my life. I didn't hesitate to say, ok, 25 pounds it is, so eat, drink and be merry! Actually, gaining weight was hell. I was already in considerable pain and had gained 25 pounds the past year. Putting on another 25 pounds put me in a place that I hated every moment. But, I kept my goals in mind: 1) gain 25 pounds; 2) have WLS and lose weight; 3) have the total hip replacement. I was incredibly focused and these 3 steps took me 1.5 years to achieve, but it was worth it in the end. Today I am thin and can walk (and boogie board). I can hike and sit on the floor and play with my grandchildren. I'm in the process now of extending my goals above and last November had a upper body lift and I'll be going under the knife one final time in 6 weeks to have a lower body lift. I must admit that I feel better now than I have in years.

Margaret, do whatever you need to to reach your goals. Don't let anyone stand in your way. When I told my husband that I had good news and bad regarding the possibility of WLS and I would just need to gain 25 pounds, he said, "you don't want to do that??" He saw how much pain I was in already and hated to see me suffer. I thought to myself, try to stop me, buddy. I'll eat everything in site in order to gain that weight to get my BMI to 40. The day of my surger it is 40.1... I was so tired of sugary foods that I didn't care if I ever ate them again.

Sorry for the long post, but I am there to support you if this is an option that you're willing to take.

Much love,

California Kathie

Hi Margaret,

Sending big hugs to you..............wish I could help.......I'm kind of in the same boat, my pcp thinks that since I lost 50 pounds I can lose the rest without wls surgery, even though I am stuck right now, and  he won't do a referral for me.  Now as of jan 1st I have new insurance and they say I have to start all over.  So now I need to find a new pcp.

Hugs, Paulette

I feel for you and I hope you get your WLS.  Is there any reason (besides it is a pain in the neck to do the paper and leg work) that you don't find a more cooperative PCP?  My PCP was so for my WLS.  He even wrote a letter for the bariatric surgeon to submit to the insurance company.  I did have co-morbidities but he wrote about my life-long battle with obesity and how hard it was on my arthritic knees, as well as, my mental health.  Find a PCP that will be your advocate.  Shop around and ask what their feelings on WLS are.
Good luck.
Bev
