Can one get 70 protein without protein drink?

Hi, this is my first time on this site.  I was banded 7 weeks ago.  I can't figure how to get
70 grams (?) protein  daily - the recommended amount by my doctor - without the protein drink.  My protein drink is GMC Whey with skimmed milk which gives me about 30 to start the day.

I have about 15 protein for lunch, mainly from tuna,  and 15 for dinner; some cottage cheese or yogurt in between.  I'd love to get back on my instant oatmeal at work instead of the drink.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi Katherine, I do eat oatmeal. I add unflavored protein & splenda to my oatmeal. I do use unjury, but look for one that works for you. I started with 1/2 scoop (10 grams protein). Good luck. Oh if you read lables there are some oatmeals that have extra protein in them.

I don't have the band, so I'm not an expert on the subject.  Hopefully, one of your fellow banders will jump in and reply.  My educated guess is that you will need to stick to the drinks for a while.  Until you can eat enough food daily, it's hard to get that much in without them.  Have you tried the Isopure?  It's more like a koolaid drink.  If I remember correctly, it has 40 grams in 20 ounces.  I watered them down because they were too strong tasting.  What about adding the unflavored powder to your oatmeal?

Good luck.  I'm sure you will work it out.

Try eggs, cheese, nuts, peanut butter, chicken, etc. Any kind of meat, deli meats. I know you just had your surgery and I don't know what you were told ... did you see a dietitian? I had RNY and I know that's different from lap band, so I don't want to lead you down the wrong path. My dietitian told me that, after six weeks, they didn't want us using protein drinks, but that was because of the drinks just went through the pouch ... but you have a different tool. So ask your dietitian, if you have one. Or your doctor. There are plenty of options available in real food for protein without using a protein drink. If you want to boost your protein, you can use AnyWhey, which is a tasteless protein powder, and add it to yogurt, oatmeal, soups, etc. It smells like Bisquick but has no flavor. But really, you can eat real food ... that's always the best option ... and the least expensive, too.

Kathy,

Why are you eating so little protein?  Do you not like meat and fish?  Or are you just finding that you fill up on a small amount of food?  Do you like eggs, cheese, beans, or tofu?  How about protein bars?

I've never had a problem getting 70 grams of protein a day in the form of solid food.  Right now my band is too tight for me to eat solid food in the morning, so I do a protein shake for breakfast, but most of the time I have a serving of Weight Control oatmeal made w/ skim milk and fruit.  I eat protein for 2-3 snacks a day and 2-3 oz protein at lunch and dinner.  I eat the protein first at every meal, so I'm less likely to fill up on carbs and shortchange my protein intake.

If protein shakes are the only way you can get in enough protein right now, by all means continue them, but the band is designed to work best with solid food.  Even nutritious liquids like protein shakes run right through your stoma and won't keep you feeling full as long as solid food does.

Thanks, Jean M.

You know, after I posted, I recalculated the protein I eat in addition to the shake and I do
eat plenty of protein - just like you - prob 15 for lunch another 15-20 for dinner and
cottage cheese/yogurt for snacks, small piece of cheese.

My girlfriend just told me of her soy protein powder that you can mix into oatmeal which will
give you 32 to start the day so I'm going to do that and continue with what I've been eating
through the day.

I am always on the lapband site, thanks, I've posted there and have "talked" to you a few times!
I just thought I'd segue over to the 50+ site - I am 60.

Thanks, as usual for your wonderful suggestions and insights.

I usually have 2-3 shakes a day.  Just to make sure the  protein is getting in. I use the SF Carnation instant breakfast with skim milk

is soy what you really want in protein?

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

HI KATHERINE,
I PREFER THE WHEY UP PROTEIN DRINK.  IT IS A CLEAR LIQUID, ALL READY TO GO.  JUST REFRIGERATE.  ALL THREE FLAVORS ARE REALLY GOOD IN MY OPINION.  IT IS A 16OZ BOTTLE WITH 20 GRAMS OF PROTEIN.  GNC HAS TWO FLAVORS AND BARIATRIC EATING HAS A THIRD, GRAPE.  I LIKE THEM ALL BUT THE GRAPE IS A BIT SWEET.  I DO NOT CARE FOR MOST OF THE SHAKE TYPE DRINKS AND THESE ARE SO CONVENIENT TO TAKE ANYWHERE.  HOPE YOU GET A CHANCE TO TRY THEM.  ALSO ISOPURE HAS A LIQUID DRINK THAT IS 20 OZ WITH 40GRAMS OF PROTEIN.  THESE ARE NOT AS TASTY BUT STILL MUCH BETTER THAN THE SHAKE DRINKS.  TAKE CARE SHARON
