Hey sweetpee.  Welcome to OFF.

My wife had an open RNY on 6/6/6. (2006).  Good thing she is not superstitious.  Anyway, she had to have the open because of a problem with her liver.  They knew the problem was there going in and told her there might be complications.  She did have a hemhorage two days later that required emergency surgery, but the doctor had sort of expected it.  I am not trying to scare you off, she was an unusual case.  Anyway, she is doing fine these days.  Before the surgery she would need to use an electric wheelchair to go to the mall or go most places public.  We recently sold the wheelchair.  She has no need for it any more.  She has lost a total of 100 lbs.  She is still trying to lose, but she was near 300 lbs to start and is about 185 or so now.  And still trying.

If you want to talk to her further, PM me and I will send you her cell phone number.  She is always willing to talk about her surgery.  She just does not do much on OH these days.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Welcome Robin,

You have found a good place for information and support. My surgery was done laproscopically over two years ago when I was 59. A few of the older gals in the support group had it done open and have done very well. Their surgery, recovery and success was as good as or better than some of the younger ones. Follow the orders from your doctor and dietitian and you will do GREAT.
