Hi, I live in the Seattle area, and am trying to gain insurance approval for my RNY. When I first told my kids that I'm researching this procedure, my son was not happy. He works for Intel, @ Hillsboro. He says about 4-5 years ago one of his co-workers had the surgery, and never returned to work, because he did not survive. He remembers that his colleague also had a girlfriend who had the surgery. Per my son, his co-worker's name was Sean Finney (not sure of spelling). I'm inquiring only for the purpose of getting a few facts to allay my son's fears on my behalf. I've researched, and am confident in my surgeon's abilities, and in the excellence of the hospital. If you have either a link, or any information, please email me directly at: [email protected] Thank you, Susan

Have you looked at the lap band procedure at all? It is much less invasive and might lesson your sons fears. I think Dr. Patterson does that procedure as well. I had mine banding done in Mexico 5/8/04 and have lost 65 lbs and have been real happy with it. I just wondered if you had looked at that option at all. Best wishes, Teresa

Susan I have not heard of Sean Finney, but I do know that there are patients who have died from WLS- but the risk is not greater than with other types of surgery. You have to decide if it is worth that risk to You, and if the benefits of an extended and healthier life outweigh that risk. For me the answer was yes and no. I decided to have the least risky type of WLS, but it also has the lowest success rate. I'm happy with my choice. My family was also not supportive, but your family does not have to live in Your body- you do. So you need to be the one to decide what is the best way to make your life the best it can be. Good Luck, Tammy
