I have been hearing alot of different thing's that hurt after surgery...does your insides hurt? like where they re-routed everything? What have been some of the hardest thing's to deal with in having this surgery? I have 33 day's left until surgery and I am getting nervous and all of these silly questions keep popping into my head. Anything helps, thanks

I really didn't have any pain to speak of. I suspect it's different for different procedures and sometimes different people as nerve endings might not be in the same exact spot. My insides didn't feel weird or painful at all, but my hunger pangs were pretty intense.....which I figure was because of the surgery. I had an open RNY and felt wonderful after surgery. I was careful getting up and moving around and stuff, but I took no pain meds at all. I think the hardest thing to deal with after the surgery was not drinking for 3 days (some docs allow ice chips, mine did not). Other than that, it was just trial and error as I learned what I could eat and not dump. It wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined it. Dina

I felt it hurt just the same way it did when I had my C-sections and surgery to remove my gallbladder. Not any more, not any less. Abdominal surgery makes it hurt when you move or roll over at first, but I did not experience any different pain because of it being this kind of surgery. My pain was very well managed by my doctor, as yours will be. Yeah you will feel discomfort, but nothing that your pain medicine will not dull or take care of. I never felt any throbbing pain when I was doing nothing, it was related to moving, or having my lap dog try to return to his rightful place in this world. I find any thing that you have to get through - you do. My root canals, baby births, strip throat, emergency surgery, all involved some yucky moments, and painful moments. Still, the experience recedes into your memory, and quickly at that. The end result is worth it. I know I was plenty scared and worried. I do pretty well in recoveries, but I know physically I have a very low pain tolerance. If I made it - you can! Dr. Patterson will take good care of you. If it is worth knowing...I feel exactly the same inside. Healing and re-introducing food is a very slow process. As far as burping, pooping, tightening my stomach to feel if it feels different, eating and swallowing, etc. it all feels the same as it always has. I know I thought I would feel SO different. My appetite is different, as is the way I think (or I should say don't think) about food. Good luck. No silly questions. Always ask - one of us will have some answer or opinion. Patty

Ditto pretty much what Patty said! I had a Lap RNY and my incisions never really hurt, but I have had pain inside when I move. I didn't take any pain meds once I left the hospital and felt fine. I was one of those people who ended up with an irritated nerve root, and I took some OTC pills for that. I have most pain right now from anyting around my waist...and, unfortunately, it is now pantyhose season. Ugh! Anything seems to bother me....even my elastic waist shorts with the drawstring. I usually don't tie it at all, because the slightest pressure is bothersome. But, I also know it will go away in time. All in all, like pretty much everyone else I know....the surgery is a blessing and the minor "irritations" are well worth the results I'm getting! Good luck to you! Michele
