I had gastric bypass with Dr. O'Malley in May.  You're right when you say it is your decision.  I know for me this was the right decision because I had a love for the sweets.  I know I cannot eat those now, and that is why I had it done.  I believe you just have to look back on why you have been overweight for 13 years.  Is it because you eat junk, portion control, or a combination of things. Good Luck,  Betsy

Hi there.  I don't know Dr. O'Mally, but I have had both the band and now RNY.   When I was first banded, I said I'd NEVER  have a bypass.  LOL The first year I was banded I went from 232 to 158.  I was thrilled.  However, that whole time, I couldn't hold a fill; my band would keep getting tighter & tighter.  I was eventually diagnosed with an esopgageal problem, unrelated to the band, but it made my keeping the band impossible.   While I still had the band inside of me and it was unfilled, I lost all hope and binged on sweets.  It's funny, because I still had restriction on regular food, but I lived on candy & ice cream. So, I had a revision to RNY and am very happy.  I do agree that if sweets are your main problem, then the band might not be for you.   Both procedures come with their own set of potential complications.  As I said, my complication was not directly due to the band.  I recommend doing lots of research, asking a lot of questions, both here and on the lap band forum, and examining what type of eating is your biggest problem.   I hope this helps & please keep us posted,

 Karen

I had Dr. O'Malley and just had my surgery this past Tuesday (10/30/2007). I am/was very happy with him and felt like I was in very capable hands. He knows what he is doing! He came highly recommended to me and I would highly recommend him to others. There is something about him that makes you feel safe in his hands - he's very confident! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

I have Dr. O'Malley as my surgeon.  I had RNY on 8/21/07.  My choice for choosing this particular surgery as someone else mentioned, is that I am an addict to sugar and they told me that I am not supposed to eat sugar or else I would go into a dumping syndrome and that's supposed to feel like I'm having a heart attack.  I sure don't want to have that feeling.  The knowing that this was irreversible was also a deciding factor as this was a decision that I made for life.  I suggest that you do a lot of research on the net and ask around or just read some of the forums of those who've done any of the different surgeries and see how they feel about each one.  My daughter and two sons-in-law have had surgery as well and we had three different surgeries.  Good luck Lynn.  By the way, I really like Dr. O'Malley.  You can read my blog under surgeon if you want to know what I thought about him.  You can also add me as a friend if you'd like.  Sue PS  I started at 256 and in the first month I lost 34 pounds following their directions for me.  The next month I slowed down to 9 pounds for the month, so we all slow down at some point.

Hi Sue Thank you for writing to me!  I am waiting to hear back from Dr. O'Malleys office to get the ball rolling.  I met with my PCP and he filled out the paperwork 1 week ago and faxed it over.  He gave me his blessing; which made me feel good.   How has your recovery been?  Keep in touch. Lynn

It's all pretty much just a memory now, but I woke up from surgery in a lot of pain, but now it's just that....a memory.  I heard hear that I should walk to deal with the pain and that's exactly what I did.  The pain definitely subsided after walking a few blocks around the ward.  I had surgery on Tuesday morning and went home on Thursday morning with a whole lot less pain.  I really didn't need to fill the pain med prescription but I did just in case.  I think I used them just once.  Pain comes with any procedure we have done....I'm a pro at that, and once it becomes a memory you really don't think twice about it.  My recovery is coming along beautifully.  I feel better than I have in a long time and look forward to every bit of this journey.  Sue

I had laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. My surgery started at 3pm and I woke up at 11 that night wide awake and walking laps around my hospital floor. I never felt any pain except when I was trying to sit up to get out of bed. But then it just felt like I had done a ton of situps and just over worked my stomach muscles. Had surgery on Tuesday afternoon, came home Thursday morning and going to have my staples removed this Wednesday. So far everything has been great *knock on wood!*

You really need to research and decide what's best for your needs, and which one you feel you can do the best with based on your needs and lifestyle. Being in the early stages, you've got the benefit of time on your side... plus, the surgeon you're going to performs the three main WLS procedures, so you have the benefit of having a doctor who can give you the most thorough and accurate information. RNY (Gastric bypass), Lap Band, and Duodenal Switch.... ask Dr. O'Malley about all of them and read the info he gives you... within this thread, you already have a couple of his RNY patients.... over on the DS board, you can find a couple of his DS patients, and if you don't get any of his Banders here, you might want to try the Lap Band board. Get all the information you can to educate yourself, and make your decision based on that.  It's YOU who has to live with the decision... might as well be YOUR decision. Best of luck to you.
