Has any had Dr. O'Mally as their surgeon?  I had my 3 hr group visit last week and am considering either gastric bypass or lap band.  My BMI is 40.5 and I am 40 years old.  I have been overweight for aprox 13 years.  I just cannot decide which surgery to have.  Anyone have any recommendations.  I know it is ultimately my decision but I'm just looking for some suggestions.  Thanks so much. Lynn

Congrats on the decision to change your life.  The choice on surgery is so individual.  I weighed 246 lbs with no other co-morbidities.  I chose lap band...100% because I knew I could control things with a little restriction.  I consider myself, even at only 5 months, a success.  Please weigh both choices you've given yourself very carefully.  One cannot be reversed!  Ask me anything you want about banding!  Add me as a friend if you'd like!

That is exactly what I weigh now - I have sleep apnea though.   Is it true that you will not lose as much with the lap band as with tahe gastric bypass?  I know it is slower with lap band but am I going to be able to hit 150 again if I stick to the guidelines with the lap band (eventually).  Thanks. That is not true at all.  We all slow down at some point.  Our tools work as well as we work them.  I don't think there are many RNYers who have lost too much more than me...if you find one who weighed what I did, had surgery the same day..we shouldn't be too far off each other's mark (give or take a few pounds).  I have given myself 12 months to lose my 91 lbs, which will bring me to 155.  I will try to go lower, but the ultimate goal that I have for myself is 155...anything beyond will be a bonus!

Jump into the lap band forum sometime.  It's fun, too!

I'm going to Dr. O'Malley now.  I'm waiting to get a surgery consultation.  When I first went to the group visit, I was leaning toward lap band, but now I think that RNY would  be better for me.  That's because I think it would be easy for me to "eat around the band".  Keep doing the research and see what people are saying on the Lap Band and RNY boards.  Some of the members comments may help you see what both the up and downsides are.  Good luck.  I have a cousin and another friend who have had RNY with Dr. O'Malley and they couldn't be happier with the results.

In our support group on Thursdays in Liverpool, there is a woman who had gastric bypass with Dr. O'Malley in Rochester.  She raves about him.
