This week I have an infection on my foot and I can't use the pool until it clears up. That's frustrating because I love getting the aquatic exercise. I'm severely limited by what I can do on dry land due to severe lymphedema in my right leg. Aside from making that leg weigh about 60 pounds more than my left one, the lymphedema causes swelling in my knee joints which mimics arthritis. I'm almost always in some sort of pain--even when I'm sitting. I can walk with a cane for very short distances and I can get a bit farther with a rollator ( like a walker but with wheel; plus, the rollator has a seat so I can rest when my knees or legs feel weak). I've tried working with weights or resistance training in the past but could never stay motivated. I even have a portable Gold's Gym device based on several resistance bands which allows for strength and cross training.
Maybe, having mentioned my excuses, I'll eigther get encouragement from you guys or a jibe for being so easy on myself. This is one time when I welcome either one.
I guess I basically have three (not sure if any of them are "legit"):
1 - we don't need no stinkin' "exercise" to lose weight, that's why we had this surgery!
2- I get plenty of "exercise" since I lost the weight by my increased activity level (e.g. from walking further distances, doing chores and duties I didn't before b/c of the extra weight, etc.);
3- It doesn't make any difference as far as weight/body fat % loss during the first 18 months out (we do have a medical study of DS post-ops that shows this to be true)

I usually exercise regularly and don't have any excuse for not doing it. However, up until last week, I did not own my own treadmill. And, when the PA weather was bad, it was very difficult to get my walk in. There were a few times that I missed it. I was always able to do my weights though.
Now that I have a treadmill, I hit it everyday like clockwork. There are no excuses.

Kyp I was gonna ask about this in a post, but I guess this is as good a time as any .. :
I see a lot of post-ops have taken up running, jogging, etc. but I wonder: is that really a good idea?
I remember when running and jogging was getting all the flack for the damage it does to the knee joints and such ... And keep in mind that as pre-ops our joints were not exactly in good shape to begin with due to all the excess weight bearing on them over the years .. So it seems, if anything, running/jogging would be even more detrimental to the leg joints of post-ops . Just my speculation here though . Any evidence to the contrary anyone?
