True vs False

Ok here goes, I haven't been taking my protein for about 3-4 days now. It was told to me that lack of proper protein can cause weight plateaus. Do you guys know if this is true or not?

You really don't want to skimp on the protein - it may not cause plateaus - but a lack of protein can cause hair loss, fatigue, muscle atrophy and death.  You probably don't want to skip the protein, at 3 months you may not be able to get enough just from your food. Good luck, Ted

I dunno about death but it will definately cause problems in the long run.   Do like I do and shoot it like a shot.  Put a scoop in 4oz of water, blend it up and shoot it.   I hate the taste but I get around 180 - 200g a day like that.

What kind of protien do you use? what do you blend that small amount up in? Is that 180-200 a day just the protien or is that food included? Sorry for all the questions but I have always struggled getting in that much a day. You look great by the way! I have been wanting to put on lean muscle but just dont think I am getting enough protien. They say 1.5 grams per your body weight. Thats 322.5 grams a day......lol whew that a lot of chicken breast! Derrick, Just curious, but who is the 'they' that says 1.5 grams per pound of body weight?  The only guidelines I've gotten from my nut. is a minimum of 100 grams per day... period. But I'm currently at 315, so by the 1.5 gram guideline, I'd need 472.5 grams of protein a day.  That's a lot more than 100, obviously.  I'm just wondering what is closer to a realistic goal. BTW, I am SOOooo tired of getting nausea, foamies, retching, etc. every time I try to eat "naked" meat.  That is, chicken, fish, pork, or beef that's plain, or nearly so - without condiments, mayo, or other such 'lubrication'.  I know most of that stuff adds carb and fat calories, but without it, my stomach rebels. Sometimes I think I should just stick to soup with little chicken bits in it, and get all the rest of my protein from whey powder mixed with water or milk.

well I am 3 1/2 years out and have been at or below goal for more than 2 years. So I am try to gain leam mass and not loose weight anymore. You are still in ln the inital loss phase so please do what your nut and surgeon is telling you. The 1.5 grams per body bound was set by me. I have read most of this from m/f or mens fitness. Some of those guys are a little nuts with the protien. They like to say that got that way from ingesting 300 grams of protien a day.(prob roids though)  I got the foamies for about the first year with solid protien. I got most of it down in sort of a soup form also. My fav was what I called enchilada soup.  Bonless skinless chic breast f/f chic broth Kidneybeans corn onion whole peeled tomatoes enchilada sauce to taste chili powder to taste garlic salt to tatse top with 2% cheese Just boiland shred chicken than throw it all in a pot and simmer till done. the longer you simmer the more tender the chic will get. My protien shakes are made with gnc van protien but i add small amount of real peanut butter and torini sugar free choc sauce. I work in a coffee shop and we have all kinds of s/f flavors and access to blenders. I have tried all kinds of flavors but this is my personal favorite.  Hang in there as time passes the eatting will get better and the foamies will stop or slow down. Derrick

I use the Magic Bullet blenders.  I have one at home and work and they work perfectly.   I use GNC 100% Whey Protein Bannana Cream flavor.   It has 20g of protein per scoop and I'll usually have 1.5 to 2 scoops per shot.   I put around 4oz of water in the blender cup along with the protein powder, blend it up and then shoot it like a shot.   I HATE the taste of protein shakes / smoothies and I've always just wanted to get it over with and go on with my day so that's why I adopted that method.

The calculation for protein consumption is actually based on your lean body mass and not your total weight.   My lean body mass with my body fat percentage being around 13% is 160ish pounds.   I'm also not taking into account the weight of my bones, organs, tissues, etc. so the calculation is far from perfect.   I try to support each pound of muscle with 1g-1.5g of protein and thats how I end up with 200g of protein per day.    Some of that is meat at dinner time but I will usually get in around 150g - 180g per day in protein shots.

Also, as a side note, bodybuilders shoot for 2g - 5g of protein a day per pound of muscle.   A little excessive but I guess it works for them along with the 'supplements' they are known to take on occasion.  :)

I too use gnc protien but I go for the vannila flavor. I'm going to try your way it sounds like it will help me. Also you calculation for lbm x 1.5 sounds more realistic to me. at least thats a goal I could hit everyday. thanks, Derrick
