Hey guys..... I wanted to continue to post that Paul made earlier, and didn;t want it to get over looked.... Dxe hit this pretty good, when he said we can sound like someone trying to share a new religion.....and that is pretty much what it is, embrasing a new way of life.... ok let me jump around here a little...remember how the chicks on the main board were just slamming Star Jones, for not coming out and saying that she had WLS... Now Star is a media hawg, but she is not stupid...and everyone thought she was milking it for the head lines....I did too at the time.... then I heard her on Larry King, what I got from the interview is that, a little while into the post WLS, she realized...this is a big deal...this is a really big deal....and that she could not with a clear mind, use her celebrity to  let people get this surgery....it's too big.... now I was listening to this, about a day after brother bob, started having problems....and I was kicking myself, thinking, I roughed him up a little bit for being wishy washy, and bam....our dear brother, is the one in how ever many thousand.... now i'm just a nobody, how would I handle being a media influence on people.... I see people every day, and I wanna slap the fork out of their hand, and take them to my surgeon....but that don;t help/// they have to be ready....we have seen those that do it for the wrong reasons, think it's a quick fix, or think it's gonna change their life, and it pretty much ends poorly... I got my before pic in my wallet, and will pull up my shirt and show anyone my ps scar...and I will talk about me...ME...I love being the topic of conversation..... and I will hold a seminar in the middle of the mall...and talk about me....and how it helped me... but if I feel myself coming close to pushing....I think of brother bob.... When the hell is he coming home again??? Russ

Russ -

I agree with you.

I recently heard Star Jones speak and the NewWeigh Christmas Lunch. Man I thought before that that she was wrong in what she did. Now, I can tell you that I have a total different respect for her. After hearing her story and it from her point of view, I understand why she did it. Also you cant always trust the media.

I had a very similar conversation a couple weeks ago...  We discussed the fact that due to our "successful" change in life..that we at times want to shout it from the roof-tops.  You see those who could benefit from the surgery...and you want to share with them the wonderful opportunities and benefits.  We then relazied....  Who the frick do we think we are to prophet on a such a personal topic.  We all know the benefits of the surgery....but we also know that we had to make the decision to make this move on our own.  Nobody could tell us how much we wanted to lose weight...we knew it...  WE had to decide to make the move.  I have found that I am more of a supporter then an encourager.  I would hope that nobody would have to have this surgery.  The mutation that we have had to do...for our health... is still a mutation.  I am glad I did it... Thrilled I did it...but................ I still want people to realize that this should be the last option for anybody....  I am glad I did it...but I would rather help others find other methods first...surgery last...and support...completely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The "Other Methods First" approach is one I have been drawn to as well. Locally, our WLS Support Group has gotten behind initiatives (along with the PTA) To pull the Coke machines and Candy Machines out of the area schools. Mississippi has for the last 6 years led the nation in per-capita Morbidly Obese Population. Several of the folks who have dropped a life’s worth of weight in the last couple of years Are putting energy into Prevention of Childhood Obesity issues. So much better to avoid the whole "Journey" entirely than to Carry all of that weight and Then take the drastic action of surgery. Best Wishes- Dx

Among the many hats that I wear at school...is that I run the school store.  For the past few years... I have sold power/gator ades...juices....waters...v8 splashes.  I offer freshed baked cookies after school...and muffins and danishes in the morning (have never eaten any of the food...yippee!!!)...  What is not realized however..is the fist year or so, I utilized regualr foods...but since my surgery...and prior.. I have only carried low-fat...low sugar.  The students have no clue that they are eating healthier...and that makes me happy...  Doing my part to keep them healthy..while still makeing a profit...

Dx,  those are a nice start .. but they're like putting the proverbial Band-Aid on a broken back ..  (reminds me of how my bro opts for the "low fat" version of foods he greatly overeats still, @ 270 lbs.)  ..  I'm afraid we're so far entrenched in our American lifestyle of way too much and easily available bad food out there and modern conveniences keeping us from having to physically move or even wanting to that the only thing that might pull us out of this dilemma is medical (or food) technology .. namely, surgical or DNA engeering and food "alteration" at the molecular level  ..    Until that era arrives, I have often even had wild thoughts of "food commando" fleet through my mind out of frustration directed toward the madness I see:  blocking the drive up lanes of fast food restaurants, piling up the bad food in stores and setting it on fire, etc. etc.   or perhaps some more pacifist routes, such as passing laws banning high fructose corn syrup, processed sugar, white flour, foods above a certain cal, carb, fat, or sugar content, etc.    but, you KNOW that just ain't going to happen, brother  .. at least in our lifetimes ..  The children are in charge of the cookie jar.  &:-/)       The best weapon we have for now against the enemy is our present WLS methods and, IMHO, the more of us that become "armed", the better  ..

just want to agree about bob. you know i was in there with him when he needed letters to his congregation when they were giving him a hard time. he was very cool. then as time got near for surgery he flipped out. i rarely have buttons that get pushed but sorry to say, he pushed mine to the limits. i think i came right out and stated he should not get the surgery, back off and think it over. he did a huge amount of hand wringing. i do feel guilty even though my advice was for him to back out. i wish i was little more compasionate about it. it's just that every post told me he didn't want it so why keep beating that drum in here.

it has taught me that everyone has a path and i should respect it more. yeah, i'll tell ya if you keep telling me you don't want the surgery to back off. i'll just keep my cool about it next time. i wouldn't wish his result on my worst enemy. it does bring home the point of your post, guys, this is serious **** and should be considered carefully, duh! carbonblob

I dont' tell anyone I had the DS, nor do I plan on telling anyone.  It's my business...and no one elses. WLS is no longer a back alley procedure.  It's been main streamed, and popularized through star power.  If someone on here wants to know about the particular surgery I had, I give them info...or they are reseraching, I might chime in, but in real life.....someone needs to find this option on their own.   Why?  Because WLS is a lot of work.....not in terms of losing weight...thats the easy part, but in terms of taking suppliments, getting in enough protein, checking my labs twice (like santa, but I don't get a present, just my health).....follow up care, etc.  How could I ever tell anyone to get involved with that, KNOWING that if they don't do those things....they will be worse off thin then they would be fat.  Scott
