Liquid requirement a medical myth?

Came across this today regarding the basis for the recommendation that people drink 64 ox of water or liquids daily.   BTW, I am not advocating that we don't drink as much water as is recommended but I personally find it nearly impossible to drink 64-80 OZ daily.  What do you all think? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22466538/

Water intake as a magic talisman which aids weight loss IS a myth, promulgated by decades of (usually female) diet coachers, nutritionists, and dieters.  HOWEVER, when it comes to WLS, it's really NOT completely bogus.  With restriction, some people have trouble avoiding dehydration unless they really work on their fluid intake.  Simultaneously (and I can vouch for this), adequate water intake is essential to avoiding constipation.  Both of these are especially important for people who have had WLS. So, unfortunately, taking in lots 'o water WON'T help you **** out the fat.  But WLS patients need to pay attention to their water intake, and maxims such as "64-128 oz. of water a day" are just simply ways to encapsulate these requirements with a broad brush. In other words, the myth was never a scientific statement, but it can still be helpful, especially to WLS folks. /Steve

I think people severely underestimate the amount of water lost due to just perspiration and exhalation. When I go on my 3 mile walks, at a brisk pace but no where near "strenuous", I can lose from 1-2 pounds of water. It's amazing. And that's before my post-walk pee. During weight loss, you body is burning fat and there are a lot of metabolites that end up as waste in the bloodstream. You'll be putting an extra load on your kidneys to filter them out if you don't up your water intake. So I don't think it's a myth. I think Dx can shed some wisdom on this subject, as I've seen him post about it before.

As others have already posted here it is different for SWL patients. I have had two occasions where I have had stomache pains, after thinking about what I had done or should I say what I had not done I realized I had not gotten in my normal fluid intake. When I hydrated myself the pain went away. I never had any kind of problem like this before surgery.  The best way I have found to keep track of my water intake is that I fill a quart bottle with water, mix in my SF drink mix and I drink on it till it is gone. I do this first thing when I get to work every morning. I drink a quart in the morning and one in the afternoon. I use to use the 16.9 oz water bottles but now I just fill my container from the water fountain. It's free. That's not counting what I drink at home or the SFpopcycles that I am addicted to.  pan head

I have a hard time getting in protein but I can't understand why anyone would have a hard time drinking 64oz of liquid.  I hear this a lot and can't figure it out..  I'm well above 64 oz a day almost 80.  I drink all day long!

I have no trouble with liquids, either. My problem isn't with drinking 64oz or more of water; it's all the running to the can I have to do as a result. When I start *****ing to myself about how onerous the need to drink liquids is, I just remind myself that I never used to ***** and moan about all the Diet Pepsi I used to drink, which was easily more than 64oz a day, pre-op! /Steve
