You are so right on these DS wars.  The ladies are tearing each other apart like a bucket of chum in a shark tank.  At least the men offer only opinions and don't let things get out of control. I have no DS option, as my insurance will not cover it.  And I don't want to get into a protracted battle with them about why they should.

Not wanting to push you one way or another, I will tell you about my experience.  Emphasis on "my". My doc told me it was my choice.  I chose the RNY, but I told my wife, not my doc.  I asked him what he thought.  He told me it was my choice, but he would recommend RNY.  The reason being the slowness of the lapband.   I am just about 3 weeks out.  I have lost 24 lbs in the 19 days.  Plus I lost 26 on the liquid diet.  So I am down 50 lbs since Dec 1st.  I can now walk up the stairs at work with no pain in my knees.  It would have taken longer for this to happen if I had chosen lapband, and I am an impatient guy. Good luck, and God bless, no matter which way you go.

Looks like you are going about this in the right way. Any surgery you have is life changing and you need to pick what is BEST for YOU. I just wanted to tell you that with only 125 lbs. to lose the lap-band can work well but it will depend on how disciplined you are. I had the lap-band on Jan 16th 2006 and as of right now I have lost 145 lbs. I am only 5 lbs. away from my goal.

The couple of things I liked about the lap-band (this is only personal) so no flamers ok:

1- No rearranging of my insides

2 - Can still eat pretty much what I want only smaller portions.

3 - Lose weight slower so my skin could catch up with my body.

4 - If I do gain back some weight after I get to goal all I have to do is go in again and get a fill.

Some of the negatives would be: 1 - Getting this regulated to find your "sweet" spot 2-  Slower time loosing weight 3 - Always having to chew, chew, chew your food 4-  Not being able to eat in a hurry, you do have to take about 30 minutes at least to eat. 5 - Band problems, slippage etc. but there are problems with any surgery Just something to think about so you can make an informed decision. Good luck on whatever choice you choose.

I think you need to have the surgery you feel is best for you.  I personally can't give you advice on the RNY vs. Lap band...because both of those surgeries would have failed me.....hence the reason I had the DS.  Good luck with your decision. Scott

Hopefully you've been hanging out on both the RNY and the lap-band forums and reading about people's experiences with both so you have a good idea what each procedure's strengths and weaknesses are. The truth is, you can't know for certain how you will handle a particular option until you're living with it. So be prepared to occasionally ask yourself "what if I had chosen the other one" after your WLS. I think this is pretty normal. But as long as you are losing weight and have no complications, you can be happy with whatever you chose. I think your wife is probably thinking along the lines of "the lap-band is safer because it involves less re-plumbing of your insides", and anyone facing a loved one going through major surgery is going to want the security of thinking it's the minimal needed changes to achieve your goal. So again, I think this is normal. But like others have said, it's your call. All you can do is be as informed as possible, then make the best of the tool you have chosen.

You need to do what you feel is right for you. With that being said. At first I was set on the lapband. After talking with the surgeon and evaulating myself I chose RNY. I felt I needed to make a drastic change and the more I thought about it I didn't care for putting a foreign object in my body.  I think someone that is commited will have success with both procedures.  pan head
