RNY Decision made- I think.

Tomorrow marks the end of my  6 month supervised diet approval with UPMC.  The surgeon's staff will be submitting the paperwork for insurance approval and I will have to declare which WLS I will be undergoing.  The appointment is at 6:30 PM Based on all of the posts about successes and failures I have read, I have chosen RNY over the lapband.  My wife is supportive, but wants me to get the lapband.   I have 125 pounds to lose to arrive at what I feel should be my goal weight (~200 LB).  RNY will get me there much faster and allow me to concentrate on building better habits faster.  Don't misunderstand me, I think the lapband has it's place too, but I'm just not sure I can trust myself to follow the program. Does anyone have any last minute advice on my decision?
Play hard or go home.

You're in good company, my friend I think your making the right decision in choosing the RNY over the lap band. I finished my 6 months in the early part of last month, and am currently in the waiting as they submit my case for approval and scheduling. My choice is the lap RNY and I know it's the best choice to help me reclaim optimum health. This is our year my friend ! Happy New Year

Congrats on making it to the next step! I sought three medical opinions on the type of surgery in addition to reading everything I could about it.  I decided on RNY and am pleased with my decision so far.  I found the surgeons opinions, from a technical point of view after looking at my body shape, to be very helpful.  I also tried to overlook, as much as possible, the speed of the weight loss since we're really talking about a lifetime change, not a few months or years. Good Luck, CB

I actually had the Lap Band and recently went through a  revision to the RNY. Best decision I ever made was to get the revision. I am on my way to a healthy and happy life! You will be on the losers bench with us before you know it. Good Luck!!

My mom had the lapband over a year and a half ago and she was lot weight, but very slow and steady.  I am like you, although the lapband may be great for some people I just dont think it is enough for me.

Good luck man.  It's all about what surgery you think will be right for you.  Some people have amazing success with Lap-Band and some don't.  Some people have amazing success with RNY and some don't.   It's more about getting your mind right and committing to exercise for the rest of your life than it is which surgery you choose.

Whichever way you go good luck and I wish you success!

hey, you chose the right word. chose. it's not about better. it's about options you and doctor decide is best. neither is better than the other, just best for you. we can't sit here and say which one is better because like i said, it's not a question of better. if you and your doc feel you'll have the best success with an RNY than go for it and never look back. as you can see, either way almost every guy in here has had success with both. good luck and don't sweat the decision.....carbonblob

All of us went through the same evaluation.  I chose RNY for the exact same reason.  Right decision because it really does have side effects for bad decisions that help you make the right decisions.  Go for it and you will be cold this summer because you have lost so much weight!!! Way to go on the 6 months supervised diet.  That is a great achievment in itself. Blessings,  Greg

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!!! I agonzed over this decision for all of 10 seconds.  I knew that the decision for me was the RNY.  I knew that if I for some reason did not learn better eating habits I would feel it and I would retrain myself again and again. As I have done thus far.   My wife too thought the lap band was the best for me. I did not have as much to loose as the next guy. My BMI was only at a 37 or so. But I did have all 5 comorbids that my doctor took into consideration when she agreed to do the surgery. I wish you luck in this adventure and will be praying for you and whatever decision that you make. Gary

I decided on the DS, but that was something I knew before I started the process. It's a matter of whatever works for you, and I can't see why for the life of me we have this RNY-DS war on the other boards. I guess maybe some people have way too much free time on their hands.
