NSAID DRUGS FYI......
NSIAD's and WLS
Good question.NSAID stand for Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs. These are like Motrin & Advil, plus a variety of others.
Many of these drugs can be irritating to the stomach. It can produce ulcers, scarring and pain.
In the beginning of WLS, particularly with the early years of gastric bypass, folks were warned to stay off these drugs completely.
With advances in science, we now know that folks can take NSAID's if they need them - HOWEVER- with a big warning. Take them carefully and only as you need them.
I tell all my WLS patients that if they need to take NSAID's to do it as follows:
1) Never take any medication (including vitamins) on an emtpy stomach-even if the label says to take on an empty stomach. You do not have a normal stoamch anymore - remember you have had WLS on your stomach.
2) Take your medications with a protein shake or a small meal.
3) Take the medication as instructed and only for the specific reason.
4) Use common sense. If the medication is not working or producing the desired results, stop taking it and talk to your doctor, you may need a different medicine.
NSAID's are good medications when used correctly. The problem is that a lot of folks go overboard. The mindset for some folks is that if a little is good, well then 10 times that amount will produce a miracle!

THanks for your questions!
Thought this might help clear up any confusions.......

My doc has had me on prescription strength NSAIDs
For my torn rotator cuff, for over 7months.
He has me take it with a Nexium and with food.
So Far, no issues what-so-ever.
It keeps my shoulder from kicking out pain,
And no irritation to my pouch.
Like a lot of “WLS Myths,”
“No NSAIDS- NEVER.”
Is totally inaccurate.

USED to take like 12 or 16 Ibus, when I was fat.
On labour day weekend, I took 6...thinking I'm down 150 lbs or so, so that can't hurt. It did. Caused a GI bleed that they never found of course after ALL the scopes....and I never thought to think of my Ibu usage as the cause...stupid, I know!
Took 5 about 5 weeks ago...and guess what. ANOTHER GI bleed...only this time the hosp correctly identified the cause...the Ibus!
Never again....! I now use tylenols, sometimes with codeine if needed...tho aint' had any in the past 5 weeks....my knee is so much better!
