Question of the day

I know I have asked a lot of questions lately.  I have tried to make them questions that I think a lot of people that are considering WLS would have.  Everyone has been very open and helpful in your responses and I hope you will continue to do so. I have read about how this tool can help eliminate a lot of the co-morbidities that people may have.  For me all I have is a mild case of sleep apnea.  Since we do read about all the benefits I would like to ask: What co-morbidities did you have before WLS? Have they either gone away or been held in check since WLS? What co-morbidities do you still have or have you developed other health issues since WLS? Thank you for your responses in advance.  Everyone has been so helpful in this process.

i had em all tp. that's why i had rny, the band won't help in that area. i was up to ten shots a day of insulin, bp meds, cholestrol meds, nexium for gerd and i had mild apnea too. just getting to the point where the nasal strips weren't working anymore. from day one of surgery i eliminated all my drugs except synthroid. all my numbers are right down the pike. a miracle. oh, and my dick got bigger! carbonblob

I'll second Carbon's answer with the exception of insulin. I had severe sleep apnea but not diabetic. And the extra length (whether its real or imagined) has been an added bonus!!

Facts Facts Facts. whatever do you mean "The Band won't help in that area?" NOT a True Statement in any way, I do not understand where this misinformation comes from. I Had High BP, Sleep Apnea, High Cholesterol, such Knee pain and spasms I was almost an invalid and borderline diabetic & Gerd. Started at 417 and am now 247 Down 170 all my co-morbidities are gone. Excuse me, but the LapBanders will continue to be the ******* StepChildren of the WLS community as long as inaccurate statements are made.  I know you meant nothing by the comment, I just have to correct when I see this inaccuracies thanks for letting me ramble on (& on). hey chris,

last thing i want to do is spread false info. even more i would never get into which surgery is better kind of thing. with the problems i've had i just might have gone for the band in hindsight. anyway, i could swear i read several posts plus my doc telling me that the rny reroutes your innards in such a way that we digest and use enzymes and hormones differently hence our whole endo system changes so drastically that those co morbidities can vanish. something a band will not do.

i hope Dx weighs in on this because i know i've some of his posts on this subject. it's all about the plumbing that makes the change. now granted, if you have type 2 and you stop eating crap and large amounts the diabities will probably disappear as will a lot of other problems that are weight driven like cholestrol and bp. you're right, i should have been more detailed in my post and mentioned that fact. if you lose weight all kinds of good things are going to happen no matter what type of surgery you have. that would have been the more accurate sentence i should have used.

so chris is right guys, if you lose weight by any method you'll probably ditch all the baggage that goes with it. my mistake. oh, one more thing chris, i don't think any here ever considered a lap bander or ds'r a stepchild. we're brothers in arms first and foremost. we all had surgery plain and simple and are here to help each other. thanks so much for pointing out my error and making the right correction. i agree, accuracy is what it's all about...carbonblob

I had the apnia.  I also had high BP, fatty liver, knee pain, ankle pain and some other stuff.  The knee is still a little iffy but everything else is better.

I didn't have any co-morbidities pre-op if you don't consider being ultra-super-duper-morbidly obese a co-morbidity.   I snored really bad pre-op so I may have had sleep apnea but I never got that tested.    The kicker for me is I knew that I probably would develop high blood pressure, diabetes, hypertension, etc. had I not done something.  It's unfortunate that I had to turn to weight loss surgery to fix the problem for me but fix it it did and I couldn't be more satisfied that I made that decision.

still pre-op so still have them Severe Sleep Apnea, borderline diabetic and skin rashes. I am really lucky all things considered but how long until the luck runs out and my heart explodes or my whole body just quits?  Hopefully I will have a date soon adn be on the losing side by St Paddys Day
