I'm home and very happy.
Had my surgery thursday 12/20 at Barix in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Laprascopic bypass. It was actually a much less traumatic experience than I thought it would be. I used the morphine pump a lot on the advice of the nurse before I experienced much pain, and never did have any serious pain -- the overall pain was worse when I had my wisdom teeth out, although I was much weaker than with that procedure, obviously. Had some issues with retaining almost 20 lbs of fluids, and couldn't pass urine, so I had to be re-catheriterized a few times, but finally they put me back on lasix, and everything started to work. Came home saturday right on schedule.
I haven't taken pain meds since yesterday, and all is well. I am taking gas-x, and that helps. Gas pains are not severe, just annoying. The hardest part, by far, is drinking the 64 ounces of fluid and getting in the 90 grams of protein a day I am supposed to have. It seems highly ironic that a few weeks ago, I could have downed a 2 litre bottle of pop on the 20 minute drive to school, now, I struggle to get in 2 litres in a day, and haven't quite made it yet.
I can't say enough good things about the facility and staff. Quality of care was exceptional, and the staff was very friendly and compassionate. In the words of Linda Ronstadt, "I'm broken, but I'm happy." Dan, who won't be too fat much longer.
