OT - Did You Ever See Your Father Naked?
Odd topic, I know .. and not sure why I'm posting this .. but it's like one of those things one has to talk about and ask about, to someone, someplace, sometime ..
I was shopping the other night and had to take a bathroom break .. While I was at the urinal a father and his son (probably 7-10 y.o.) came in and did their business next to me, unabashedly .. nothing unusual about that as to "dad", but the son behaving that openly, seemed to be quite a different thing to me .. I then had an epiphany, realizing that scene would never have taken place with my own dad and myself .. I do not recall having ever even seen him in the nude.
We were never a very religious family (although we attended church once in a great while) .. we were however, very upper class, conservative, somewhat 'Old World" (dad and mom's parents were immigrants from Europe and Russia), Republican types .. My dad owned a tool & die company that he built up from its beginnings as a tiny machine shop in our garage to one of the largest businesses of its kind in Southwest Missouri .. Dad was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, who believe in self-sufficiency .. (he at one time wanted to be an Alaskan guide) .. Despite all this, I realized that he was never comfortable around me or my brother in the buff .. I don't think he was a prude (nor did he have any "deformities" or reason to hide anything, as mom confirmed for me after he later passed away) .. but nudity was just not something he was comfortable with, apparently .. He had the classic apple body, having a big distended abdomen (like a turtle shell, I used to joke) but skinny arms, legs, butt, and rest of body .. He probably weighed around 200 lbs. or a little more, at around 5'9"-5'10" or so ..
So .. the question is .. why would dad have been so "secretive" with his body around his boys? I know, in my case, that must have influenced me to behave similarly around him (and probably even around my brother and other guys, even those my own age) .. I will always wonder how this attitude may have influenced my ways in life, or if it even did ..
My question posed to ya'll: is this behavior the norm, or rather unusual? what are your experiences in that regard, if you'd care to share?
Well again, I don't think that was dad's "hangup" (no pun intended) .. My mom was a pre-med student and a volunteer nurse for many years, so she was used to seeing other male "parts" besides dad's, and she said there was nothing for him to be ashamed about in that regard .. And what man would be worried about a young boy seeing their unit, unless they were VERY poorly endowed???
The whole thing just remains a mystery ...
I was raised very similar to you, as far as the nudity issue was concerned. We lived in a small house (2 parents, 2 boys, 2 girls), and nudity was simply NOT allowed. My mother made my sisters wear LOONG gowns after they bathed and my brother and I slept in a t shirt until my departure from home at 20 years old. When my wife and I had our children (currently 6 and 3, boy/girl) I promised myself they would never feel that thier bodies were anyting to be ashamed of. We don't run around the house naked, but if my son needs to ask me a question and I'm in/getting out of the shower, I don't have a stroke if he walks in on me. I do have a rule about him and his sister, we don't allow them to dress or see each other unclothed.
As far as your situation in the restroom, my son and I have often done that. Especially during the potty training period.
im not al; that old and nudity was not a big issue in my house how ever i never thought about seeing my dad nude i did once on accedent he was putting wood in the stove and the tip of his hmm hmm hit the stove and he screamed and woke us up so we all ran out to see what was wrong thats when i found out he sleeped in the nude and was hung like a friggin horse lol but anyway i guess that scared me so now i dont even like getting undressed in front of others not that im ashamed of my parts but just feel uncomfortable about being in the nude around others besides my wife that is happy holidays what wierd story and i guess im wieder for responding lol have a good one
We were fairly conservative, but I clearly remember going skinny dipping with my father, my uncles and my male cousins on several occasions back in the woods by the creek where he grew up. His original house didn't have running water,so a lot of activity went on by the creek. It has some nice deep pools that are inviting in the summer. We also went naked in locker rooms and showers in both NJ and PA. That was just normal for all males at major parks with lakes.
However, in deference to my Mom, we didn't walk around naked at home. That would clearly be out of place.
