Struggling With the Liquid Diet Post Surgery
I had my LAP-Band put in on 2/28 and I'm really getting frustrated/bored with the liquid diet. I'm supposed to be on it for three weeks but I really want something that I need to chew and has some flavor. Any suggestions? I've had no issues so far and have lost 8 pounds since surgery. I don't want to cause any harm but I feel like if I don't have some sort of solid I'm going to go completely crazy. Any help?
I hadtwoweeksliquid post op, first few days clear, then added tomato soup, then a few days later went to pureed food which was fabulous! By the third week I was testing solid foods.
Each surgeon must have different rules.
Be creative and try different flavored protein drinks, make some like milk and some thick like a milkshake so you at least have some variety.
Call your nutritionist to make sure.

You are not even 1 week post op?
You need to suck it up and follow your doctor's orders --- period.
You are allowed to be frustrated and as mad as you want to be --- but you have to do it.
You signed up for this -- you signed the consent to have surgery, and you agreed to follow the rules.
Either you, or your insurance company put out some big dollars to change your life --- you have to be a grown up and follow the rules.
My suggestion is to take it one day at a time --- using this time to focus your thoughts and energy on healing and on your bigger goals.
21 days is going to go by -- and you are not going to go crazy by following the rules.

Thank you, however I don't want to be misunderstood. I've been following the rules to a T and I worked very hard for 8 months prior to surgery to make sure this is what I wanted. My comment was meant for support and to see if possibly anyone might be currently going through this or had gone through this and could offer me a little help or advice.
I'm not hoping to go and eat a slice of pizza, what I wanted was to know if there was anything I might be able to eat that still qualified as a soft food.
I spoke with my nutritionist this afternoon and she gave me some great options, including cream of wheat and half a banana and instant mashed potatoes with some protein powder and no butter. Did the trick.
I came on to this site because it was recommended to me by friends who've gone through this and I was merely looking for a little support.

I'm glad you called your nutritionist and she had some great tips for you. I found the post op liquids to be hard too...the first week went by fast. The 2nd week I started getting hungry. I called the office and they suggested tomato soup and to blend a banana and ice with a protein shake. That did the trick and the 2nd week went by pretty quick. You're doing great, hang in there.
There are plenty of soups you can have with flavor that should not compromise your post op rules.
The things I drank on the post op liquids were
Tomato Juice (I hate V8 but that would work too) That handled my salt cravings
Cambells cream soups - either fat free or healthy request, cream of mushroom and cream of
chicken (or other flavors you like) - I just strained out the pieces. Depending on what they are allowing you for carbs, seems like with cream of wheat and mashed potatoes you don't have much a carb restriction but you can use milk or water to cook the soup.
Protein smoothies (not too thick) will give you a different flavor/texture than just an ordinary protein shake you mix with powder and water.
The fact they let you on mashed potatoes and cream of wheat appears like they gave you the OK with mushies? Did they talk to you about this at all? If that is the case, you have endless options to foods that are the same texture as cream of wheat and mashed potatoes.

Thank you, Nikki. I can do puddings and yogurt now, along with cream of wheat and mashed potatoes (as long as they're not too thick). Last night I made cream of chicken soup and then put it into the Magic Bullet to make the pieces smaller and it was delicious! Tonight is cream of mushroom. I have a hard time (ALWAYS) when I'm home. Luckily I go back to work tomorrow and I do much better when I have a set schedule. Seems like it would be the opposite but it isn't.
If anyone is looking for a yummy shake, this morning I made a shake that tasted like an orange creamcicle. 4oz of 50/50 Tropicana OJ, 1tblsp of sugar free frozen yogurt (vanilla) and 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder. Add 2-3 ice cubes and blend it up. So good and filling. Took me an hour to drink it. I think it's my new favorite. :)
