ATLANTA....

Hi! I love your screen name. He's my first love too! Atlanta is a great place to live and though I'm not African-American, my husband is. Me? A lil white girl from an ittybitty town in Alabama. So, for me, leaving that lil town and coming to Atlanta was scary and exciting. I've been here a year and can truly say, I think its a great place for up and coming African Americans to be. I know there is less prejudice here than other places in the south. Most of my managers here are African American and are doing great. If you don't have much job experience, its awful, but if you have a good, steady resume of work, you will find a job, and probably a good one. If you can, try to live to the north of Atlanta because except for some spots, its hard living in South 'Lanta. I have a Japanese friend who is going to Georgia State that wanted to live near college and has been robbed(no lie) no less than 3 times in a year. Bless his heart, he still lives there. Yep, there are people that love that part of town...it has its charm, but its safer to live to the northeast of ATL. A little more expensive, but in my eyes, worth every penny I spend in more rent....ya hear me? My husband says that you need to bring mace and I agree. Also, when using MARTA(our rail system) I have find it helpful not to look anyone in the eye. Otherwise, you will have some interesting characters that do NOT understand that you dont' want to talk with them. One of the most interesting and famous people on MARTA is a little old man that has an invisible friend. You DO NOT want to sit on his friend. Seriously! He will go off. Also, theres a little lady that stays near Five Points Station that will go off on you if you're white.! I haven't encountered her, but I here she is brutal but funny! Make SURE you have a new job before transferring! I know you probably know this, but its hard to be in Atlanta and looking for work. My husband, when he newly graduated from Morehouse had a really difficult time finding work fresh out of school and had no work experience at all! He is doing fine now. But it took a while and a toll on us while he looked for work. The Good? Oh my, if you love the ARTS, this place is sooo for you! We have great plays, a MARVELOUS museum, and so many different events going on all of the time. Sports...well, you already know. Atlanta always is poppin, so its easy easy to find something to do. And the medical care here is absolutely the best. People here are friendly and won't hesitate to help you if they can. One reason I won't leave is even though we are in a inter-racial marriage, no one looks twice or says something to us here. We are normal. Its amazing though when you step 20 miles out you realize you are still in the South, though. When I go home, I sure do appreciate Atlanta. Its not perfect, but its way better than what we had to deal with outside of it in Georgia. The coolest thing for me(I was sheltered my whole life..LOL) was the great diversity of ATL. I wanted to be somewhere my children wouldn't feel different and boy did I come to the right city. This is like a little United Nations here. You can find any type of food you want within a few miles of where you live. And its awesome too..its like traveling to that country. I know that when I become post -op I will mourn the loss of that spicy food until my new pouch can take it in small amounts. HE HE HE....So...anyway, I could rattle on, but if you have any questions, holla...I wouldn't mind making you one of my friends...you sound really cool.....Hope to see ya, Anne

Hey there,
Welcome!! I'm from Miami Florida I relocated to ATL about five years ago, to be honest I miss FLA, however I can't complained I like ATL too. As far as growth goes for African American its true to a certain extent however is very competitive here.
Atlanta gave me great opportunity and success I don’t think I could have in FLA. If I was as set as you seem to be I would not have moved. Since you’re moving with family I’m sure it will be ok. In my case I relocated alone so is kinda hard. But career wise things are great!! Good luck with your journey Kay.
