Calories burned....can you help?

Im a little confused about the actual calories im burning during my workouts.  My workouts consist of using my treadmill to walk and jog.  I walk 5 min, jog 5 min, walk 5 min ect.  My treadmill has a calorie counter that supposedly keeps track of calories burned im assuming based on how fast you go and how long your on there.  Today, i was on for 60 min and it said i burned 705 calories.  However I also have the Nike+ software on my ipod, so i use that as well during my workouts.  For the same amount of time and exercise, Nike+ says I burned 381 calories.  So which one is more accurate? I sweat my booty off and could hardly talk during my workout if i needed to, just curious as to which one i should go by.

Any thoughts??

Jenn

Jenn,

The Nike App might be more accurate because it does not sound like the treadmill takes into consideration hieght, weight,or age... typically as a rule of thumb, your burn approx. 100 calories for each mile walked or jogged...

Unfortunately, the Nike app doesnt take any of that into consideration either.....which is why im so confused by it all!

I have heard that people generally burn about 70% of their body weight in calories per mile.  This makes sence to me because it takes into account intensity and duration.  If you are more intense you will not be there as long but will burn more calories in a short span.  If you are going a bit slower but taking longer time, you won't burn calories as quickly but will be exercising for a longer duration of time.

Example:
I weigh 250 so 70% is 175.  The theory is that I will burn that many calories per mile.  If I do 3 miles in 24 minutes it does not take that long but is very intense.  If it takes 36 minutes I will burn more slowly but being out there for 12 more minutes makes up the difference.

I don't know if this is accurate but it makes sence to me because it factors in size.

it all has to do with how much you weigh and the intensity of the exercise.  so how much do you weight?  and what was your speed and incline on the treadmill? If your ticker is correct and your about 120 something pounds I would definetly say the Nike is more accurate.  if you do not enter any weight into the treadmill it accounts you for being 150 pounds.  a person that is 200 pounds will burn alot more calories at the same activity and intensity than a person at 130 pounds.  i hope that helps
