A couple of the guys I used to work with swear by them.
A little history on them from their perspective.
They will force you to be a more ergonomically correct runner because they are painful to run in if you are not running technically correct. Flat foot runners or heel strikers be warned.
It took them a while to get used to them, but they said they got instant feedback when they were not running correctly.

I second the double knot. As a matter of fact, I never untie them. I wear them lose enough that I just slip them on.
