Anybody else watch the NBC Ironman footage today?

Some great stories.

I can almost feel the pain of the athletes that didn't make the cutoff times.

That would be just crushing.

I'm thinking of trying to get the family over there in 2012 for vacation.  I'd love to see it first hand.  There isn't a snowballs chance in hell I'll qualify for a spot, so unless I get a lottery entry, a vacation is going to be my way to see Kona.

Anybody have any experience vacationing there?  I wonder how hard it's going to be to get a place to stay over there during the ironman.

I just found the Universal Sports Network on one of the obscure channels on my system up in the 200's.  It is an NBC network and has lots of coverage from the obscure olympic type sports.  They have had the Kona coverage from every year since probably 03.  Once I star****ching, there is no chance of resisting.  I find it to be horribly fascinating.

My wife and I just finished watching it on the DVR.  What an inspirational thing to watch.  I remember the first time that I watched one of these and was in awe of the athletes as I still am today.

I watched it today too. My club has a party to watch it at a local pizza joint with a big screen tv. So we were watching all these fit athletes while scarfing down pizza. LOL

Can you believe it was 25 years ago that I first saw this race on TV and thought "I'll never do that -- those people are crazy!" once they got to the run?

I was kind of surprised by some of the stories they picked to concentrate on. Harriet Anderson, the oldest woman, was in a bike crash at Kona and broke her clavicle. Yet she still finished (made the cutoff by 5 min) and won her age group. But nary a mention...
