White Rock Report #2
I ran my first ever marathon on Sunday in Dallas. I ran at White Rock because I had my RNY surgery at Doctors' Hospital Hospital at White Rock Lake.
One of the best things about the weekend was getting to know Dan. He is a great guy and a true motivator. We had lunch together Saturday and I got to meet his wife and three children. They are all great folks. His oldest boy and I really got along well. He had run the one mile kids' run and told me all about. I believe Dan has a triathlete in the making.
Race day was cool and foggy. Dan and I were able to meet up and spend some time together before the race. It was a true sea of humanity. With 20,000 participants it took as a long while to get to the start line after the gun sounded. In fact the leaders were between mile 2 and 3 when we got started. It was so crowded we were only able to run 11 min miles the first couple of miles. Dan had to make a pit stop at the firs****er stand and I lost him, but we picked up again later in the day and I saw him off and on the first 23 miles.
Things went well after we cleared the biggest part of the crowd and settled in to the 9:30-10:00 minute miles for a long time. I hit the hills (Dolly Partons) feeling pretty good. They begin at the 19 mile mark. Oddly enough that is also were the Hooter Girls were. Yee Haw.
I ran the hills without stopping, but after that I was wiped out. Had to talk quite a bit of the rest of the race. I think my hydration and nutrition were all screwed up. Any way, the last six miles were the harderst thing I have done in my life. I kept telling myself to keep moving and I would eventually get there and I did. I saw my wife and two sons right before I got to the finish line that was very up lifting and Dan was waiting on me when I got there. I couldn't hardly talk or walk, but I was certainly proud of myself at that point. I had my metal and my shirt and went and found my boys and wife and they took me home for some rehab.
I certainly appreciate all of you on this board and look forward to hearing from you about your accomplishments.
