Topic: RE: Type 2 thinking about RY surgery

Hi, I am type 2 LT diabetic too who had the RNYGB for diabetes control on Jan 29/14.  I had a BMI before surgery of 30 and am now down to 22.  My diabetes had severe IR and I am pleased to tell you that I am off all insulin now, just on 1500mg of Metformin, and 8Mg of Coversyl.  I was on 550 units of insulin a day prior to the surgery. I have to say this has been a miracle as far as diabetes for me!  It comes with a price for me though, I have some really weird symptoms now that none of the specialists have been able to figure out as to why or what they are, or how to treat them.  It is kinda a give and take with this one for me.  I would recommend you do lots of research, have tons of support, have a good doctor and team (in hospital and at home), and be a really positive person before undertaking it.  I had really no options left, I had trialed everything out there and this was kinda a last resort.  I wish anyone going for it, GOOD LUCK and stay POSITIVE.

Topic: Taking Metformin

I would like to ask all of you who are taking Metformin….. Do you crush the pill before taking it?  My dietician said that it is best to alway cru**** before you take it.

Those of you who take it whole, do you have any stomach problems?  I had the sleeve done and I am 6 wks postop and I might have to get back on Metformin.  My A1C is still at a 9.

I was just wondering!

Topic: RE: Gastroparesis and Rny

I developed it AFTER WLS, and trust me, a person does not want to be dealing with both. it's horrible. Work with your doctors to resolve the gastroparesis first....there might be a way to treat that to where you can safely have the WLS.  I got ulcers after the WLS, and after those healed, my esophagus was paralyzed for unknown reasons, and my pouch empties very very slowly. I pretty much have to eat literally all day to get my calories in. I typically have to get re hydrated by IV at least once a month because IF i can swallow food without it coming back up, it stays in my pouch for to long and since we don't make as much stomach acid, it can cause food to get stuck between the stomach and the intestines. Have had two intestinal blockages as a result of this.

Doctors don't think it's related to my surgery, and I don't regret having the surgery, but i sure wish they would have caught the gastro paresis first.  It's a lot to manage both, plus when I had the ulcer, and could barely swallow the carafate (liquid med to stop the ulcer) it was pretty miserable.

If you have a good GI doctor, I would try to pin them down as to what they think is the natural progression of your particular case, and think about what you are willing to live with afterwards.

I would probably do it again, but i would really wish i was better prepared for the worst case scenario with "both" my conditions......best of luck to you......

Dear jen

What was your c-peptide level before the operation? I mean did you have any insulin reserve in your pancreas?

My wife is type1 diabet. Actually she was type2 in the beginning. But she lost all of her insulin reserves in her pancreas? Can she have any benefit of having ds operation?

Topic: Type 1 diabetic-still having trouble with malabsorption
I had the rny 3 years ago. I've been a type 1 diabetic for 26 years. Getting on the insulin pump saved my life, but I started going through menopause and put on about 40 lbs. This threw everything off and my A1C went over a 10. My doctor suggested gastric bypass surgery. My sister had it and had a very good experience with it so I did it too. Three years later, I'm still having problems with malabsorption and malnutrition. I started at 260 lbs and am currently at 99 lbs. I have chronic diarrhea and am constantly hungry because everything goes right through me. I'm just wondering if anyone else has gone through this?? I'm thinking it might be diabetes related? I've been hospitalized and tested extensively. Doctors are stumped!! Now they want to reverse my surgery. I don't want to gain my weight back which will negatively affect my diabetes, but I can't live like this either. Any suggestions or comments are welcomed. Thank you.

I use EAS Advantedge Carb Control in chocolate. It's tasty, not too sweet, very low carb with soy protein and pea protein. My nutritionist said that while pea protein is lower quality than meat, it's fine as a protein supplement. It has 17 grams of protein per 11 ounce container. You can get it at Sam's Club.

My best advice is to drink lots more water to flush your system, take in more protein and move more. Exercise if you can (i.e. walking or stationary bike). If you're on protein drinks, try to find a low-carb option. If you are mixing a powder, mix with almond milk, which has very few carbs. The 20 units of Lantus doesn't seem like enough. Mine is up to 60 and I've got good fasting sugars. You really need to talk to her about that. High sugars are going to slow down your healing and you need to heal up well. Or talk to your bariatric clinic about this.

Topic: High sugars after rny

I had the Rny on 8/18/14. my blood sugars have averaged over 260  since my two week all liquid diet. I was on four shots a day plus 1000 metformin 2x a day. Now my endo has me taking just 20 units of Lantis at night. She is aware of my high blood sugars . my starting weight was 279 and currently it's 263. I need a little encouragement that things will get better. my sugars were high in the hospital too. I am following the Post diet . I'm averaging aprox 12 total carbs a day. any suggestions are welcome . Thanks.

Topic: RE: type 2 considering bypass

I am a 53 year old woman and  had RNY surgery 6/30/14 and weighed 295 on surgery day. A1C was 8. I'm now about a month post surgery and am off all blood pressure meds. I take minimal short acting insulin (5-10 units for a carby meal) and 60 units Lantus at night, down from 20 units short acting and 120 units lantus at night. My current fasting bg is 84-114.

Some of this is probably weight loss (35 pounds down), added exercise and a more carb-restricted diet. I've been diabetic since I was 30, so I went into the surgery hoping that the diabetes will go away, but prepared that it might not. But I am very glad that I'm on fewer pills than ever before!!! And I look forward to the future of maybe not having to do insulin at all...

I am only 2 weeks out, but my weight loss has been great!  I was taking 2000!mg of metformin a day, plus another drug, and 36 units of insulin.  Currently I am taking 8 units of insulin and that is all.  I have not experienced any extreme lows yet.
