I was wondering if anyone with type II DM, had neuropathy prior to gastric bypass and their neuropathy resolved when their DM II did after surgery. Did anyone experience this?

thanks

Hi and thanks for your post - it's been quite a while since I signed on here.  I hope you are doing well after your surgery.

In response to your question, my insulin resistance is not gone.  I don't think it ever will be gone.  Now that I am 3 years out from surgery, I am battling some predicted weight gain, which I have to watch very carefully because of my insulin resistance.  A few pounds - more insulin resistance - more insulin needed - more weight gain - you know the cycle.  The surgery certainly helped and I do not regret it.  Everyone is different, so whether your insulin resistance will resolve remains to be seen.  Mine is quite severe, so I knew it would not go away completely and it certainly hasn't.  I eat low carb regardless, am on a pump, etc.  I have recently added Symlin to my regime to help reduce post meal blood sugars, reduce appetite and perhaps promote some weight loss.  I've gotten the first two, but not the last one.

How are you doing?  My weight loss was slow in the beginning, but between 3 and 6 months is when I saw the most marked and dramatic changes.

HI Everyone...

Reading with interest about your Type 1 Diabetes and the pump.

I did have Type 1.5 (you ask-what is that?).  I was an adult when I became Diabetic and very uncontrolled.  Consequently, my vision was damaged and now can't drive and lost my career as a Realtor.

I mention this as I had kidney failure and went on dialysis as I waited for a transplant.  I got two...a pancreas and kidney.  No more dialysis or Diabetes and a new kidney.  This is now 11 yrs ago!

My point in this is remember the COMPLICATIONS of Diabetes.  They are real!!  You all look to me as youngsters (I am 71 now).  I had the sleeve 14 mos ago and lost 104 lbs and maintaining at 128 lbs but want to go to 125 lbs.  I could not have the RNY for fear that I couldn't absorb my life sustaining anti-rejection meds...The sleeve came along just in time and I also didn't want to take the chance of a lap band due to it possibly moving or coming loose and affecting my new organs...

I loved the pump (early days-Medtronic) which couldn't control me b/c I was eating the carbs...So Go back to basics and eat less carbs.  At the beginning of my sleeve surgery I was on 60 grams of protein but as the weight comes off-then I was lowered to 30 g of protein and maybe less now but I love the Premier Protein shakes-Chocolate...

The injections I did I injected in my fat tummy and it was like "buttuh"..lol

Keep in mind those complications.  Get the final weight off which I hope you will be using less insulin (insulin stores fat-hence gaining wt)...

Good Luck to you all.

PS I was impressed by the remarked new technologies ie THE PUMP of today.

I also have a profile.

Hugs,

Hi, I'm a 1.5 diabetic, too--diagnosed with type 1 since 1989 and I'm on a pump and had RNY 19.Aug.14. I am new to RNY but took a long time before deciding to do it. I'm about 100 lbs overweight and like you said, it is viscous cycle of needing more insulin for insulin resistance, gaining weight, not losing enough, and after a decade of gaining about 10 lbs a year (and two pregnancies), here I am. I'm wondering if your insulin resistance is totally gone and how much less insulin you are on now. Do you think it goes beyond low carbs? I feel like there is something the RNY does that helps with insulin resistance, but I'm not sure I understand what it is. But while low carb eating is part of it, it isn't the whole answer! I would loved to pick your brain and hear your experience.

Topic: RE: Type 1 diabetic-still having trouble with malabsorption

Hi, I, too, am a type 1 diabetic for 26 years and while I don't have experience with the stomach issues you mention (I had the surgery in August so it hasn't been long), I'm happy to see another type 1 on here, and I hope you are feeling better and have an answer. Before RNY I would have the feeling like food would pass right through me and I'd had a lot of diarrhea and what not and wondered if it was a result of long term type 1--some people with type 1 also have delayed stomach emptying, I think, or the opposite of that, and my first thought when issues crop up is ,"is this diabetes related?" which is isn't always, but it's hard to not think that way. Feel free to send me a message to connect further. I have a few q's for you re: type 1 and RNY! Thanks!

Have you been tested for C. diff? It's an intestinal bug that DSers sometimes struggle with. One of the symptoms is chronic diarrhea. Have you been tested for it? If not, it wouldn't hurt.

Another thought--what about food sensitivities? As we age, we naturally become less lactose tolerant. Or, maybe a preexisting sensitivity to wheat has been amped up by perimenopause?

RNY doesn't usually produce profound malabsorption like the DS does, so I'd be hesitant to label your problem as that. If it is, though, have your doctors tried Creon or other prescription pancreatic enzymes? DSers use those sometimes.

Good luck to you.

This is what I am afraid is happening to me!  I had my RNYGB on Jan 29/14 for diabetes control (LT type 2 on massive insulin, meds and severe complications).  I weighed 185lbs and I am now done to 135lbs, with about 10 lbs I could spare to loose yet before being too thin!  My hubby says he thinks I am going to starve to death having had this surgery.  It has helped my blood sugar control immensely- was always on the border of coma land before (too high) and now mostly normal values, once In awhile I creep up to 12.  Anyways, the biggest thing is I have these weird symptoms the docs can't explain and they are making my life a living hell!

I do not get the typical dumping type symptoms- diarrhea is one of them!  I do get some of the other symptoms of dumping though- sweating, heart palpitations, nausea, vomiting.  Then I also get hypoglycemic attacks that are not TRUE hypos,-just get the symptoms of one at 4-7 levels!  I also get headaches, severe fatigue, severe bone pain, and I get very cold body temperature.  The drs think I have an dysautonomia (autonomic nervous system dysfunction) now- maybe had it before too and that is why my diabetes was so intractible!  All I know is now I am always feeling yucky and as I loose more an more weight I am getting weaker too.

R u using meal replacement drinks or protein shakes at all?  I live on them lots, try to take in as much healthy normal foods as I can too but I still have tons of trouble eating anything that isn't pureed.  Does your doctor think you have dumping?  Do they say you absorb your nutrients? I had to increase my intake of fat too- that helps somewhat.

I wish you luck and hope you get some answers soon.  It is very scary to loose too much weight too!

You can pm me too.

Topic: RE: Taking Metformin

Hi, Right after my RNYGB I crushed my Metformin for months but after about 6-7 months post op, I started swallowing it whole with fluid.  I do get nausea/vomiting but I am sure it is not because of taking my meds whole, happens to me after I eat anything pretty much.  Best to ask your physician though what is best for your individual case.
