Dumping Question
Hi-
This question is for those of you that know you dump on sugars. At what amount of sugar do you avoid a food because it has too much? For example, in WLS for Dummies, they say that rarely anybody will dump on a food if it has 4g sugar or less per serving. As I'm increasing the foods that I eat I don't want to get myself in a situation where I could dump because I've had too much sugar. Tonight I had pasta sauce that had 6g sugar per serving but I have a jar in the cupboard with 13g sugar per serving. The 13g seems similiar to what I saw in the grocery store last week for canned fruits in 100% fruit juice. And, I accidentally purchased a "lite" applesauce with a similar sugar content. Would this amount of sugar cause dumping for those of you that dump? If I do eat these foods and don't dump, does that mean that I won't dump on sugars at all?
I'm sorry if this is a question that I should know the answer to, but I get confused.

Everyone is different. I stick to the nothing over 8 grams of sugar rule with the exception of NF milk and fruits.
Some might dump on 6 grams where it would take someone else 16-18 grams before they dump, and then you have the unlucky ones that don't dump no matter how many grams they eat.
I have dumped twice on fats, that alone makes me never want to tests the waters with sugars.
My Dr just told me yesterday she tells everyone single digits in sugar grams are better for us.

My surgeons office told us to concentrate on the list of ingrediants more than the sugar grams. Sugar cannot be one of the top three ingrediants. I had a rough time finding a pasta sauce that listed sugar and item number 4. I only found one and was so scared to eat it, but had no problems. Another trick to remember is that sugar goes by many other names. Examples I found on the internet:
- barley malt
- beet sugar
- brown sugar
- buttered syrup
- cane-juice crystals
- cane sugar
- caramel
- carob syrup
- corn syrup
- corn syrup solid
- date sugar
- dextran
- dextrose
- diatase
- diastatic malt
- ethyl maltol
- fructose
- fruit juice
- fruit juice concentrate
- glucose
- glucose solids
- golden sugar
- golden syrup
- grape sugar
- high-fructose corn syrup
- honey
- invert sugar
- lactose
- malt syrup
- maltodextrin
- maltose
- mannitol
- molasses
- raw sugar
- refiner's syrup
- sorbitol
- sorghum syrup
- sucrose
- sugar
- turbinado sugar
- yellow sugar

At first I seemed to dump at over about 7g sugar, especially if I didn't have some protein first. So half of an apple would make me dump. Now it definitely takes a little more - I can safely eat about 12g at a time as long as I eat it with something else dense so it doesn't go right through the pouch.
I can safely eat a piece of fruit now, as long as it isn't outrageously sweet. I also dump on fat and seem to be more sensitive to fat that sugar now. It was the opposite at first.

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for when I dump. I've only had three times, and each time was something different. I've eaten a whole mango which is tons of sugars and no dump, and yet one small wafer cookie and dump-o-rama!
Dumped on beer.
Dumped on SF peep
Seem to be getting foamies again though and haven't nailed down what's causing it.
So, I'm not much help. I've tried a hershey's kiss and one does the trick for the chocolate fix. I've had a girl scout lemon cookie and no dump. I've had SF cheesecake and no dump (only about 1/3 of a piece). So I can't figure out my triggers. I just follow my docs orders pretty closely and don't worry about regular foods too much as long as they are not pre-packaged.
My rule for shopping is shop the outside of the store and avoid the inside aisles. That's where the carb-evil-dumping-devil lives.
