Hello, new girl here
Hello everyone, I just wanted to say hi and let you know I am lurking around on the boards now. I am 38 years old with a BMI of 65. I live in France and will be having the surgery in France. I am hoping for the Duodenal Switch, but I wont know what this particular surgeon can do for me until we meet for the second time next week. I have done the pre blood work, and psych evaluation. I guess I passed because I never heard anything that tells me any different.
I am told that French insurance pays for it as long as you are above a certain BMI which I am more than twice than, so for the first time in my life I actually won at something.
I have been reading this message board's posts for the last couple of days and I have to say that it has given me so much inspiration. Even tho I am meeting you guys at a less than perfect time in my life, I look forward to talking with you, and if anyone needs any help, please let me know.
Laelle
thank you so much for the warm welcomes.
The French healthcare system is great. I am actually an american but I married a French man and we moved to France 2 years ago. The healthcare is one of the reasons we moved here. The only problem I have found with it is that people dont second guess their doctors. If he says you have something, then that is exactly what you have. Why would you ever get a second opinion? They are always right. I am not use to that mentality. In the usa I have had doctors make mistakes so I am always there to double check the info of what medicine they prescribe for me. But I have to say so far the doctors have always been right. I am so counting on this to be true for my surgery. He says that he has yet to lose a patient doing bariatric surgery. But if he has only done like 5 surgeries that statement would be totally uninformative. He is also a cancer surgeon and has been doing bariatric surgery for at least 10 years. Thats is the only info I have found on him. He was very kind tho. When I walked in his office he saw that I might not be able to fit in his chair, so he got up and went and got me a chair. He is the first doctor that ever did that for me. He is part of the bariatric community that some of the usa's most prominent doctors are a part of. He says that he has had some americans come to france for him to do bariatric surgery on. I am just uncomfortable with the fact that since I am the ONLY superobese person in all of france, how can they know how to care for me?
LOL! I can't believe you are the ONLY SMO woman in France. I know that French women have a reputation for thinness, but there have to be some bigger sisters somewhere....
I know I've seen some posts on other OH boards about surgery in Spain as well as Brazil and Mexico. Maybe you can get more info here about surgeons in France as well. http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/nonsponsoring+baria tric+surgeons.html?Country=France
greetings laelle welcome! it's nice to meet you. we had similar starting bmi's. how tall are you? i'm 5'10", and quite a bit older than you at 51. i had the RNY, but just wanted to tell you that all has gone very well for me. having this surgery was clearly one of - if not the number one - best decision i've ever made.
wishing all the best for you!
