I'm impatient and having a pity party

The Dr. told me that I could try to start solid foods today so I had a scrambled egg with a little bit of cheddar cheese on it for breakfast.  It was a little heavy in my pouch, but not too bad.  4 hours later I was in the bathroom with the most obnoxious diarrhea ever!  Ick! I honestly thought that I was done with all of my unhealthy eating.  For  6 months my eating habits continuously improved and before my liquid diet I was so sick of all of the crap I was eating I didn't even CARE that I wouldn't be eating that crap again.  Now, I am so upset...not so much that I can't eat junk (although when I really get myself going I can go there), but that I can't eat a darn thing without getting sick!  I'm so frustrated and there's nothing that I can do but learn to cope my way through this. I'm really getting a crappy attitude though.  It seems that the few times that this has happened to me I tell myself that if I can't tolerate what I just ate then I will eat nothing at all or only clear liquids.  I guess this only happened one other time and that was the day before my surgery when I was so sick of drinking milk products that I just decided to switch to water until after surgery. OK, I just needed to vent.  I know that I'm pushing myself way too hard, too fast.  Tomorrow is only 1 week post-op and I need to ease up on my body and let it work its way through this process.  I *have* to learn to be more patient.

It can be so frustrating in the beginning when pouchie is getting used to taking in food again.  Chin up, it WILL get better!  :)

How long has it been since you had solid food?  Your stomach is rejecting food because it's only had liquids for how long?  The thing to remember about a pity party is there is only one person on the guest list.   Give your pouch some time.  I've heard of tons of people who still can't eat eggs.  It's a matter of trial and error.  Next time just try the eggs without the cheese.  Lots of people do well with refried beans too... It will get better...we all promise!!!!!!!!!!!

Try sugar free pudding or something of that consistency, cottage cheese, etc.  Eggs don't agree with some people, and it might have just been too much for you to handle this early out (eggs and cheese is a lot of fat after nothing but liquids for a while - not surprised it went right through).  It'll get better, and you will be able to eat again.

Just wanted to say sorry that you are struggling a little bit right now.  I wish I had some experience to tell you that things will get better....but I know from reading all the posts that the first few weeks are really tough.  You can do this I know you can!  Just be easy on yourself....your body is re-learning how to do everything.  HIGS, Jennifer

Thanks everyone!  I'm off of my pity pot again.  DH and I went to the store and I got some different foods that I can try until something agrees with me.  I know that this will get better and I know I've got to get familiar with my pouch.  I hadn't thought that it could also be that I haven't eaten anything but liquids in such a long time.  That's a really good point.  While DH and I were out we were talking about all of the positive changes that I have seen already and I know things are just going to get better from here!  Thanks for listening to me vent though.  I needed just to whine for a minute.

I'm glad you've moved past the pity party and that your DH helped you get some different foods to try.  I had a hard time transitioning back to real foods after my surgery, and remember just how frustrating it was.  I had been on liquids for about 20-25 days (can't remember exactly) when I was given the okay to eat pureed foods.  Even though I chewed things to death, some stuff just did not sit well, maybe because I hadn't eaten "real" food in so long, maybe because I was still healing.  Whatever the reason, it was a struggle to get in enough proteins and liquids.   I ate a lot of yogurt and cottage cheese early out because my pouch found it very agreeable.  Hopefully you'll find a few "core" foods that your pouch likes, then you can try new things a little at a time.  On the upside, things do get better relatively quickly.  By 8-12 weeks post-op, I was able to eat quite a variety of foods comfortably.  The last things I was able to add back were raw, whole fruits and vegetables, just because they are so "rough" and tend to have a lot of volume.   Anyway, glad things are already looking up!!!   Kellie

Just an opinion but are you taking any anti-nausea medicine?  I am 6 weeks out and still am taking an anti-nausea medication on occasion.  My surgeon told me that sometimes the nausea can last for up to 3 months.   Just an idea in case you get really bad where you can't keep anything down.

I'm not taking any anti-nausea medication anymore.  I was kind of ticked about it because the nurses were having a really hard time discharging me from the hospital since it was so busy and my medications got lost and blah blah blah.  Well, at the last minute they realized that there was a mistake and the Dr. only ordered IV anti-nausea medication for me.  They didn't want to take the time to have him call in a prescription so they just told me to use peppermint if I felt nauseated.  I've been using a SF peppermint gum (what the NUT recommended) about once a day to cut down on nausea and that's been working pretty well.  If I continue to have problems with nausea around eating though I'll talk with my dr. when I have my post-op visit on Wednesday.  I had some RF cheese last night for dinner and that stayed down well so I can add that as my first core food.  Had peanut butter this morning and I don't think that's going to stick with me real well (I ate it too fast), but I'll have to wait and see.  You're right though, finding the right foods is going to be my biggest challenge these next few weeks.

It's a rough time, things as you once knew it are no longer the same and won't be again. It's hard to get your head on straight at first. Eggs are a tough one, they made me sick for months, so I quit trying them for awhile. If you can find Greek yogurt, try that. I get the nonfat plain from Trader Joes and add Splenda to it, Fage is another brand. It's got great protein, 22 grams per cup. You won't be able to eat that much right now, but it's still good protein. It gets better as the days go by.
