I'm home!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to update you all that I am home and doing great so far!  The surgery went well and I seem to be adjusting very well.  I did have a dumping episode that knocked me out of commission for most of the day yesterday - I'm pretty sure that it was Citracal that did it - not sure if it was too much food for 1 day post-op, if I ate it too fast, or if it had too much sugar, but I'm going to switch to a different calcium source for the next couple of weeks before trying it again.  Other than that, I've been going on some long-ish walks, sipping my water, trying to wean off the narcotics, trying to get in all of the medications and supplements (vitamins, actigall, Lovenox, Percoset, etc.), and take plenty of naps! The one thing that I completely did not expect was exactly how NOT hungry I would feel.  After being so obsessed about not being able to eat anything while on the liquid diet I was really looking forward to not being hungry, but when I was walking down the hallway at the hospital yesterday I saw the other patients eating scrambled eggs and bagels and it made me sick to my stomach to actually think about eating that.

Welcome home!  I definitely had food aversions for a while post-op.  I lived on milk, avocado, and peanut butter for about 2 months because very little else was palatable.  Smells are also really strong at first - even good smells can be too much.  It will pass, but like you I was surprised how disinterested in food I was.  That also passed, and I was sort of sad to see it go.  Good luck on those first weeks of recovery, they are the toughest.  All the best, Jenn

glad you are home!  How many pills did you take at once?  My first week out i tried to take too many pills at once and I ended up having what my office describes as "mild dumping".  So many that is what happened to you to?  I hope you are able to isolate the cause and for it not to happen again.

Thanks everyone!  Today has been going much better and the only thing that I have changed is not taking the Citracal.  So, as I anticipated, I will avoid that for a while.  I can't believe how HARD it is to drink water.  I'm really going to have to pick up the pace of my sipping!  I sip, sip, sip, and then burp, burp, burp.  It's annoying, but cute.    Hopefully I'll continue to have this positive attitude as I get used to my pouchie.

We didn't have to start our calcium until after our first post-op visit at 10 days.  I still hate it!  Oh, and get used to the burping.  I do it everytime I drink or eat.  Loud, beer belly burps too!  And just wait for the gas to start.  Whew, I can clear a whole aisle in the grocery store.  I can't help it.  But one caution on the farting (sorry for the gross word), in the beginning, don't fart away from the toilet.  It could cause a really gross situation that requires cleanup (hope you got the pic). Milk was utterly disgusting to me in the beginning and I still don't care for it much, but I tolerate it when I have to.
