Fathers' Day Plans?

For those of you who have husbands or fathers, what fun things do you have planned for Fathers' Day? I don't have a husband or a dad, but I remember that it was really hard to do anything for my dad because he was such a stick-in-the-mud about celebrations.  You couldn't buy him anything he liked and he hated whooping it up.  We'd try, but it always fell flat.  Years ago when I was engaged to my college boyfriend,  I had to laugh when it turned out the man who was almost my FIL was just like my dad.  We planned a Fathers' Day BBQ for him and he had a sour look on his face the whole day.  Let's hear what you have planned!  BBQ?  Road trip?  Leaving dad or hubby alone so he can enjoy a favorite sporting event?  If your dad or hubby is deceased, do you still honor the day some way? My Dad passed away in 2000, but I'll cut some roses (his favorite flower) from our yard and go put them on his grave Sunday. My Father-in-law is celebrating his 70th birthday today, and my husband and I are taking both he and my MIL out to dinner. Hubbies older and younger brother weren't even invited. They never think of things on their own and know we will all be together for a BBQ on Sunday so I'm sure they plan to celebrate both days then. Of course I planned the menu for Sunday and called and told them what to bring. I asked my FIL what he wanted or needed for each day ... Mr Practical said $$ to buy chlorine tablets for the pool. I went and got two huge buckets of the tablets he uses, one for Birthday and one for Father's Day. Should last until next year this time.   Strange but today being Friday the 13th I just realized both my Dad and FIL were born on the 13th ... in different months.

We'te getting together at one of my sister's homes on Saturday for a cookout.  Hamburgers, hotdogs, various side dishes, etc.  My Dad will likely hang ou****ching whatever sporting activity is on tv, then take a little nap after he eats.  He's not much into whooping it up, but he enjoys it when we all get together.  My sisters and I pitched in and about him a new Mantis tiller.  It's a small rototiller that's great for flower beds and tilling between rows in the garden when everything is fully grown.  He had one that he used so much it died.  He's hard to shop for, so we'd thought a replacement was at least something he'd use!   I'm taking coleslaw and "fruit thang" to share.  I got the recipe for "fruit thang" from a co-worker at my old job and it's my hands-down favorite summer dessert.  Here's the recipe for anyone who's interested (this is one of those things where there's never any left at the end of the day!!!!):

Fruit "Thang"

 Ingredients:

1 small package French Vanilla instant pudding  2 cups milk  1 15 ounce can sliced peaches  1 15 ounce can sliced pears  1 can tropical fruit salad  1 pint fresh strawberries  1 pint fresh blueberries  1 Entenmann's pound cake  1 8 ounce tub Coolwhip, thawed  Prepare pudding according to package directions, using 2 cups milk.  Put in refrigerator while prepping remaining ingredients.  Drain canned fruit and cut into bite-size pieces.  Wash strawberries and slice into bite-size pieces.  Look blueberries for stems, bad berries, etc.  Stir all fruit together in large bowl.  If it is really juicy, put in colander and let drain well.  (Doesn't have to be dry, but it should not be really, really wet either.)   Slice pound cake in half; set one half aside.  Cut one-half of pound cake into small cubes  (about the same size as the fruit).  Place cake cubes in bottom of deep bowl with straight sides.  Cube remaining half of cake set aside.  (I cube cake in two batches so it is evenly divided between the two layers.)  Spread prepared pudding over one-half of cake cubes; then spread Coolwhip over the other half of cake cubes.  Cover with one-half of the prepared fruit.  Cover with remaining cake cubes.  Repeat pudding and Coolwhip layers, except reverse sides of the bowl.  Sprinkle with remaining fruit.   When it's all in the bowl, you should have the following layers (the only thing that changes is the pudding and Coolwhip):   6th layer:              Fruit                        Fruit  5th layer:              Coolwhip              Pudding  4th layer:              Cake Cubes       Cake Cubes  3rd layer:              Fruit                        Fruit  2nd layer:             Pudding               Coolwhip  Bottom layer:      Cake Cubes       Cake Cubes  Refrigerate.  Best when served within 24 hours of preparation (cake gets soggy otherwise).   NOTE:  You can use sugar-free pudding, sugar-free Coolwhip and fat-free pound cake if you'd like.  I've done it and no one can tell a difference.  You could lighten it up even more by using angel food cake, but the texture would be considerably different.

I don't get along with my dad real well, so I'm not doing anything.  We have some stuff we need to send my father in law, but we haven't sent it.  Ryan made some CDs for him, and we bought him a Wally the Green Monster bobble head at Fenway (he collects weird bobbles and we've never found Wally online so it was nice to finally get that one).  I'm sure we will send it late, but he still hasn't sent Ryan's or my birthday presents (end of March and beginning of May respectively) so I think Ryan comes by this trait honestly, as do I.  My mom is often months behind sending stuff out.  She's been better lately though, so maybe I'll grow into a responsible adult someday too.  Fathers Day has never been a holiday around my house For the people who do celebrate it though, I hope you all have a great day and lots of fun!

We are celebrating my dad's 60th birthday AND father's day this weekend.  Every year this weekend is an exciting one because he's get's double the celebration.  We are taking him out to a nice italian restaurant tonight and then back to the house for presents and cake.  I'm sneaking over mom and dad's before dinner to decorate and surprise him.  I can't waid!
