Chairs are such nightmares.. In one of the meeting rooms at work, I don't actually fit in to ANY of the chairs.. In the other one, I only barely fit. If I get much bigger, I'll be stuck taking my desk chair..  And booths, or the bolted down swivel chairs in McDonalds.. Not even a chance.

I agree with what every one has said. I think it is one of the biggest reasons I don't like to eat out. I used to love take out, esp. anything ethnic.

Some time in the last few years as I've gotten more confident professionally, I've found I can ask for a chair that fits my butt with absolutely no embarassment. In fact, many of my colleagues plan ahead and are sure to schedule mtg rooms where the chairs fit. I started asking for what I needed at work, and now I am finding I can do it anywhere.

My biggest peeve is really big stores if no riding carts are available. I can try to walk it, but I wish there was seating for me to rest. Maybe what I need is a rolly walker, but I'm fighting to just stay with my cane and progress upward - I feel like the walker is a step backward.

I'm so paranoid about chairs that I size up the booths whenever my best friend, Deb, and I go for lunch.  She is around 100 pounds soaking wet, but I still love her!  LOL!  Anyway, when the booths fit we do that because otherwise my butt and hips are killing me in the chairs or I worry the whole time I'll break them.  So one time I squeezed into a booth and luckily the table was moveable (or not, I never thought of that!) and when I got in, it flew right over into Deb!  OMG!  It didn't hurt her or anything but we were both surprised!  Hmmmmmmmmmm, wonder if that table was SUPPOSED to move??!!!! Of course we all have that problem!! One time, i went to olive garden with a male friend and the hostess actually asked me if i would like a different chair ... implying i might not fit in the chairs at the tabel. I was mortified !!!  Now that I am almost 6 mos out of surgery I proudly request a booth!! Not particuallrly because i now fit but because it takes so freakn long to eat my butt actually hurts from the chairs !! Booths are more comfy ... when ya fit ! There used to be several chairs at work I couldn't sit in .... well last week I sat in the last chair that i coudn't sit in . People dont understand that aren't obese ! It felt so good to sit in that chair !! ~Sarah

oh my, you are SO not the only one. in addition to the whole restaurant issue, i once had a totally humiliating experience in a hotel. i travel for work (and won't digress into my airline experiences here!), and spend hours and hours in hotel rooms working on shows on my laptop. before i had surgery, i was working in this beautiful, luxury hotel in century city, california. i checked in, got to my room and found the desk chair (where i was going to spend the next 24 hours) had arms and was incredibly painful for me to wedge my ass into. i had to call the front desk and say "hey, remember me...large woman that just checked in? i MUST have a different chair to use at my desk -- don't care what it looks like - it just can't have arms." definitely humiliating.  but life can change. now i can sit anywhere!! i wish you all the best! deb

hey there!  I'm SO with you on restaurant seating.  It wasn't until very recently that I started being able to sit in booths again.  I still stay away from seating with arms because of my wide bottom.  Check out my profile - November 2007 blog titled "the last steak" and you will no longer feel alone.  it was a horrible night for me and the seating was a major factor in that. It won't be this way forever!  I wish you luck in getting surgery in the future!
