Hello Everyone: I'm so upset, whatever I do I can't make the scale keep going down, Everything seems to get bad now, I was able to drink all my protein shakes and now for some reason I can't finish them, I'm not eating, just a little bit of solids, and everything started when I started with the solids. I don't want to think that I went through the surgery only for 30 pounds. Is this normal? What can I do? Is there any time that you can replace the shakes for protein bars or something less hard to drink, it's just too much liquid. Chris

Christina - i had a very hard time when i started on solids, lots of vomiting episodes, so i took a step back, and sometimes if i'm very busy, i'll still eat a "mushy foods" meal.  Do you have a NUT you can talk to?  I hope this get's better for you, i'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers, lys

Hi: Thanks for your advice, I will try the mushy foods. I don't know what is a NUT? Chris

I'm not as far out as you but I was going to also suggest maybe pureeing your foods for awhile and/or eating mushy foods and the previous poster suggested. Have you tried drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink No Sugar Added?  My NUT has us mix it with 2 cups skim milk and 1/2 powdered milk to really get a lot of protein in.  This might help get protein in since you are having a hard time eating.  Just a suggestion.  I can't stand any of the Protein drinks so far and this is a main source of Liquid Protein for me. Please don't get discouraged.

How long since the scale moved?  Its probably a stall, if you are getting too intense about the scale, hide it and don't weigh yourself for a few weeks.  I stalled for a month, basically all of month 2.  A lot of people have a long stall at 1-2 months out, and you've just got to live with it.  Your body has had a lot of trauma, its confused, and its holding on to the weight for dear life, literally.  Its gone into emergency mode, trying to not only heal but also not starve.  If you can't handle solids yet, stick to protein shakes for another week and try again.  You must get your protein in.  Or puree if you want to, or eat soft things like yogurt and cottage cheese.  If its too much liquid to handle, I'm not sure what to tell you.  Sometimes drinking it iced helped me, but a lot of people say room temperature liquids are easier early out.  I thought ice cold was much easier.  There are some protein "shots" available - 42g of protein that is in sort of a jello that you swallow - not many ounces, maybe 10.  I am not sure how bad they taste, but they have them online or at gnc.  You can also buy some powdered skim milk and try adding that to things for more protein - add it to your regular milk, shakes, etc.  Or buy some protein powder (samples first) to mix in with hot cereals, etc.  I'm not sure you are ready for protein bars, you are so early out still and they can be difficult to digest sometimes, in my opinion.  They are dry, and if you are having a hard time getting liquids in you should stick to liquidy food to increase your liquid intake, at least that's what I think.  If you want to try them though, start with just a little and see how it sits.  I think the atkins caramel bars are good, and some of the eas bars are decent.  Every person is different though.  Good luck, stay calm, and just keep working at it.

Chris,  I'm sorry your going through this...it can be a very hard time...I also stalled in my 2nd month so I think it may be fairly common....As far as the protein goes when I was very early out I took my protein drinks for a walk with me.......I filled up my water bottle with my protein mix and walked around my neighborhood and used that time to try to get in my protein....I walked untill it was gone.....drink your shakes before you eat......you will get passed the stall :)  Estelle

Hang in there!  I can't give too much advice because I'm still pre-op, but I've been reading WLS for Dummies and I just finished the section on what to expect after surgery and one of the few things on the list was a fear that the surgery would fail and we won't lose weight.  My therapist tells me that my new stomach will be like having a brand new baby and that the first few weeks will be tough as I learn what it wants/needs and how to respond to it.  You'll get the hang of it and your body will get the hang of it and the weight will start coming off.

I struggled with the stalls early out. End of 1st month, 2nd month, & 3rd month.  I'm now at the end of my 6th month and I've lost 93 pounds!  It will come.  Your body just had to adjust to it's new eating habits, new digestion, and recover from anesthesia. One of the best things someone told me after about 4 weeks was to stop sipping and take larger swallows of fluid. I struggled to get enough liquid down in a day and that included protein drinks.  Now I can finish 20 oz water in about 45 minutes.  That was a big help.   Your new pouch is healing and adjusting to all the changes.  It gets better I promise

I stalled early out as well - it seems to be very common.  I was just sure that I was the only living person who would not lose weight with RNY.  I was wrong!  I have lost 132 lbs since my surgery on 6/20/07.  After surgery I came home from the hosp. heavier than I went in - pumped full of fluid of course.  Then the old body hung on for dear life before it would start losing weight.  It has been pretty steady (with the occasional week with no wt. off) since then.  Also, refried beans were my main food after going off liquids.  They go down easy and they are protein.  I never did like the protein shakes.  You will be just fine - trust all of us who have been just where you are now, it will happen.  Hang in there and post here.  Shirley
