Talking on getting down to a normal BMI.....
Here is the information I said I would find on the test that helps you find out how to set a realistic weight loss goal for yourself. There was talk about this on the Minnesota board and I think that this test is a really great idea once you are losing. NIcoleLynn was actually able to set a better goal for herself once she had this test done. I think it is fantastic and more of our surgeons should be suggesting this to help us reach our goals!
Post from NicoleLynn on the MInnesota Board:
Good Morning Jennifer! Yes the test I had done is called a Biometric Impedence Analysis or BIA and it will give you a reading that will tell you how much of your weight is lean body mass (i.e. bones, organs, blood, muscle) and how much is fat. According to my sister many fittness centers/gyms should have it and personal trainers should be able to administer it. Just make sure it is done in a quiet room with dim lights as the machines can be sensative. Another good method is a dunk tank and there is a professor here at University of St. Thomas that does them for a reasonable price the dunk tank would be the most accurate way to figure out this information, but may be a bit more difficult to get to. Hope this helps! Having started out with a BMI over 50 myself I can relate to needing to be able to set a realistic goal.
Good Luck Everyone!
Jennifer
I am a lucky girl. The scale at my drs office measures EVERYTHING. Impedence is one of the things it measures. When I started this venture 185 of my pounds was non-fat mass. Now it is 160 pounds. It does help in keeping you realistic about the weight you can actually get to and helps me reason out that I will never be 120 pounds. Not that I want to be that weight - what would I do at 120 pounds, I weighed that in 1st grade!!!
