OT: First job
My first job EVER was working selling magazines over the telephone. I was 18, had just gotten my car and had to pay for gas and insurance on my own. I wasn't crazy about telemarketing, but the guy was all excited and loved my voice and how I spoke so I got the job with no problems. However....... after the first week, I noticed it was KINDA shady that we had to change the company name every day, and that the office was comprised of 1970 desks with old school dialing phones and that there was a master switch that could shut everything off in an instant.....
I quit and left after my first paycheck - $200 or so which was written out of the dude's PERSONAL account, accompanied by an explanation that *I* would have to deal with IRS taxes on my own because he didn't report them....... too shady for me - no WAY did i want to appear on COPS or something like that!!!!
My next gig was at Astroworld - in the German town section...... had to wear Layderhosen (sp) - now THAT sucked big time!!!!!

i was 15, too young to get my working papers, but old enough to do *something*. something was delivering the paper - not a real paper, that little throwaway town newsy joint with the valuepak coupons. it used to be brought to the house in several stacks that i'd have to cut open, tri-fold, wrap in the plastic bag and ride around the neighborhood tossing on porches. took me 4 hours to complete a route, this was twice a week. made 50 cents for every complete delivery (400 papers). by about week 5-6, dispatch was calling me tambout we're getting complaints that the paper is in the grass, put it on the driveway or on the front steps and you need to complete the route by sundown.

My first job was telemarketing and I hated it.
1. you was stuck in a room full of people doing the same pitch.
2. you couldn't hear yourself for listening to other
3. I sat by a smoker who stanked and I gagged the whole time i was there
So needless to say after day 1 I never went back.
Then I got a job at Safeway/Appletree who are no longer in the Houston area. I stayed there 6 years until they left. So this was my first real job that I consider a job.

Telephone soliciting the Los Angeles Times- I was 16 and I lied about my age (said I was 18) to get the job. I hated that job from day one. I didn't enjoy getting hung up on and it was run like a sweat shop - complete with a supervisor walking up and down the aisles of our little desks yelling about sales - we weren't allowed to hang up until we were denied 3 times firmly or cussed out.
I lasted a whole month.
Next job was at a nursing uniform shop in a mall. Boring but much better.

Doc was really a nice guy, he 'hired' me to do odd jobs for $1/hour, rather than for free. I loved it! I mostly cleaned out crates, cleaned treatment rooms between clients, walked dogs, and bathed dogs and cats. Later, I worked the front desk, and he always let me scrub in to observe him performing surgeries. What more could a kid who adores pets ask for! Being paid was a bonus, I really would have done it for free!
It started out as something to do in the summer, but it worked out so well that I continued working after school 3 days a week and every Saturday morning. Doc took all of us staff to a sit-down lunch after work every Saturday to show his appreciation. I felt so grown!
I worked there 3 years until I was 16 & wanted to work at the mall to be close to fashion and friends. I remember that time as one of the best experiences I ever had!
That is SO cool!
