Topic: RE: Basilar Joint fusion
Well, I had joint fusion surgery on 1/21 and now have a beautiful black cast on my left hand/arm for the next 8 weeks... I'm gonna go insane with itching I can already tell.
The doctor discovered I had no cartilage in the joint at all and had some damage to both bones which he smoothed to fit. I have 3 pins and a tensioning wire (and screws) holding the bones in place while we wait for fusion to take place.

Topic: RE: RA after RNY X-post
Hi,
Have you tried Celebrex?
I have severe RA, I am 54 years old, and, after I tried Methotrexate, Avara. Embrel and Prednison, ( each of them made me miserable ), I stoped at Celebrex . Less side efects and no stiffnes in the morning anymore .
I hope this wiil answer some questions you may have .

Topic: RE: Barrett's Esophagus
I have suffered from reflux and hatial hernia for 12+ years, been on many medications, but most successful has been my Prevacid (Lansoprazole) 30mg daily. As long as I take my little pink/black pill I generally am asymptomatic. Have you tried it?
Topic: RE: Felt like I was crazy.....
Wel I have RA and after RNY I gave up sodas- which eat your bone anyway so no loss. I do use splenda and no complaints. I am having flareups a lot less frequently than before RNY and its more controllable. I add protein to my water and I use Mootopia from HEB which has a lot less sugar. If you cant get that see what other milk options you have in your area. Kroger and Walmart have other options you have to look them up. Meat is very limited for me since surgery so I try to eat turkey, tuna, chicken, pork. I also was using Humira for quite some time. I just thought that with the weight loss it would magically go away. Well, no magic here so I have been on a few other meds- no luck so I will probably go back to Humira. Good luck
Topic: RE: weather is killing me :(
I know what you mean about the weather and the pain. My knees, ankles, elbows, and hip are killing me. I know some is hereditary, but I also know I did a lot of damage myself carrying around a lot of weight for many years. I use to be on Lyrica for fibro. It caused weight gain too and I could not tell a huge difference when taking it. I continue to take flexiril at night. I take meds for migraines too. What do people on here take for the arth pain? I take liquid gel cap ibro from time to time and tylenol from time to time. tyl doesn't really do anything for me though.
Topic: RE: glucosamine, chondritin, msm
Agree.
btw... I only recommend Dona brand glucosamine. It is the brand which was used in the clinical trials for osteoarthritis which showed efficacy (in fact it is available by prescription in Europe). It comes in powder mix in water form and a 2 pill taken once a day form.
The problem with nutrional supplements is that the FDA can not regulate them and many glucosamine products either have a lower than stated amount (some have even been proven to have no glucosamine in them at all), or a bad quality glucosamine. You can get it at walgreens.com and amazon.com.
The problems with MSM and chondroitin is that the medical studies are very wishy washy for chondroitin. In fact, last year at our EULAR meeting, there was an hour presentation going over studies which showed that it worked followed by another hour showing why it doesn't work and why researchers should stop wasting their money on chondroitin research (the jury is definitely still out on this one.) The evidence behind MSM is even worse.

Topic: RE: Tylenol Alternatives: What's the story on COX-2 Inhibitors, NSAID/PPP Combo, Arthrotec treatments?
tedthelightbulb:
Well written, and I basically agree. I feel very strongly that the choices for treatments of medical conditions is should be a 2 way street where decisions in therapies are made between the patient and the doctor. None of the choices you listed are fool proof, but are safer alternatives than NSAIDS alone. Using a COX-2 inhibitor (Celebrex any dose, or meloxicam at 7.5 mg a day), Arthrotec, any NSAID along with a PPI inhibitor, and one you didn't mention ... nonacetylated salicylates (like Salsalate and Trilisate) can give pain relief with a much decreased risk in ulcers compared to NSAIDs alone.
Comparing the risk of an ulcer on these modalities compared to let's say surgery is a no brainer... it is much less likely to get a severe ulcer from taking any of these compared to getting a total hip replacement for example; but they are not 100% without a risk of ulcers.
So I would say... hey, we've tried everything to include other pain relievers, injections, physical therapy, exercise, etc; our choices are Celebrex or total hip replacement. Chances of a complication on Celebrex is markedly lower than a complication from surgery, but there is still a small chance for an ulcer on Celebrex (very small).... what would you like to do with this information. Then let the patient make the choice.
It should not be a black and white decision as often times presented in this forum (i.e. never take any NSAIDS of any type).

Topic: RE: OsteoArthritis
I need to lose about 90 lbs. I'll look into taking a higher dose of D3... my Dr told me that D can give you constipation....which is already a bit of a problem....its always something!.. It looks like I may need to add some magnesium.
Topic: RE: OsteoArthritis
How much weight do you need to lose? I've lost 173 pounds, and while my joint pain is no doubt less than it would be if I hadn't lost weight, it's byno means gone. I still take NSAIDs daily.
I honestly think I hurt just as much now as I did pre-op, but at least now I'm getting something in return for the pain---mobility.
Check with Vitalady---I take the D3 50,000IU capsules once a day, and it's made a big difference.
