Are BMIs making us insane? Interesting site

I'm 5'10". According to official BMI standards of "normal" weight, I can weigh as much as 174 and as little as 126 and be of normal BMI.

126??

OMFG, if I weighted 126 pounds at 5'10", I'd look like a bag of bones with saggy skin on it!

I found a site this morning: www.mybodygallery.com/

that I found really interesting and thought I would share it. You enter your height and the weight you want to see, along with clothing sizes (if you like) and body type such as apple or pear, and it provides you with pics of real people who fit what you entered.

These two pics from the site show what my height at 124 and 125 pounds would look like. Maybe it's just me, but does "normal" look healthy to you all?

Yes , totally . Of course I DO work in the fashion industry where you can never be thin enough perfect enough or young enough lol ...

This woman would be told to lose weight where I work lol if she wanted to stay employed . The thing that really BOTHERS me is that the designers , the photographers ,the Interns who work for NOTHING for goodness' sakes ... people who have no real reason to fall under this pressure ...

get promoted VERY much based on how well they conform to this standard . Despite NEVER being in front of the camera .

Ugly Betty very much depicts reality in this sense ... and I think ALL Of society is trending in the direction of the tastemakers ( who we are ) . Whether we like it or not .

And that said , many in the fashion industry recognize the ludicrousness of this situation , where the average AMERICAN shopwindow MANNEQUIN is now a size 16 ( up from 14 ! ) because MOST women in America are PLUS SIZE ... yet fashion is being made and shown on size 000 6 foot tall 14 year olds who are constantly being pressured to be even SMALLER ....

it very frustratingly DOESN"T mean we can do much of anything to stop the TREND ...

That said I think we really need to accept ourselves as we are and NOT strive for some impossible body -ideal .

Its interesting that WOMEN allow themselves to get trapped in this utterly pointless competition and distraction of self-starvation while their male collegues get better TAILORING and concentrate on getting BETTER PAID ...

SEXISM !! internalized SEXISM !

You can't really compare your formerely MO body to that of a young womyn who has never been overweight in her life, she looks fine at her height and weight.  If you were never overweight I am sure you would too, but since your skin is stretched out and whatnot it isn't the same anymore.  There are plenty of womyn who were always thin and remain thin as they get older and they don't look like bones they look normal with no drapping skin and nice muscle tone.  We ruined our bodies so we pay the price.  My bmi is 23.2 which is normal, I know if would be happier if I was around 125 which is still normal for my height but unfortunately I am too old for that weight now, the wrinkles and crepey skin are more depressing then the fat that is under my skin now.  Its all about what you find visually appealing.  My boyfriend finds Angelina Jolie disgustingly too thin, I think she looks beautiful.  Its very personal what we find visually appealing, I prefer thin to thick in womyn, and thick to thin in men, but thats my preference.  It is the reason I like to see myself thinner, we all make our own path and our own decisions what we should and shouldn't weigh.

No not at all, I think they look tall, lean, athletic, perfectly fine.  It is not a look I could ever achieve nor is it one I have ever aimed for but that doesn't mean it isn't attractive.

Not Heidi, but no, they aren't 'too thin" much less 'way too thin." They look like lean, athletic, 20 year olds.  I think we've gotten so accustomed to heavy teenagers and young adults, that lean no longer appears 'normal' to many people.

I went to see Green Day about 6 years ago out in San Diego during the American Idiots tour. I hadn't seen them in 10 years probably at that point.  I looked around the stadium, and I was really struck by how chunky the girls wer.  It's hard to deny it.  So many girls are way bigger  through the middle and hips and way bustier than we (my classmates) were at the same age in the 80's.   Seriously, playing 2 varsity sports and at what would now be a size 8 (12-14 back then in the old 'standard' sizes) I was pretty much the biggest girl in my high school class.

My mother, her sisters, etc, were tiny.  You should see my mom's wedding dress. Now, they weren't as involved in sports as we were growing up and not carrying as athletic a build. Still, they were TINY. At 5'5" my mom weighed like 109bs and had a 23 inch waist.

I will not follow that chart to me it is unrealistic. I am 5'7 i should be at145lbs. For me anyway it about how you feel. Do you feel heathy are you off all those medications. It is not about reaching a number on a chart it is about being able to enjoy life

They have very light bone structures for sure. Both look very thin to me, but as someone who has decided she's perfectly happy at a BMI slightly off the top of that range I guess it's not mine to judge.

They don't look anorexic/unhealthy thin to me, just thin. I would probably look fat to them (let's not even discuss my shar pei disguise).

Highest weight: 335 lbs, BMI 50.9
