MindStream Academy To Offer Scholarships For Obese Teens
It takes a special type of person to devote their lives to helping children succeed. Ray Travaglione is one of these individuals. He has dedicated his life to making a difference in their lives and his latest venture, MindStream Academy, might just be the most important task he has taken on. Travaglione, whose previous experience includes founding a private high school and the International Junior Golf Academy, created MindStream Academy after recognizing one of the most pressing needs of our time: the obesity epidemic that is plaguing our children at an alarming rate. The co-ed, rolling open admission program that he and his team have created brings together several core components, each of which have been proven to be successful on their own to battle obesity.
“Obesity affects every part of a teen’s life-from insecurities caused by societal pressure to look a certain way, or living in a culture where healthy choices are not always the most convenient. All of these components can add to feelings of low self-worth, which perpetuates a seemingly never-ending cycle." says Ray Travaglione, CEO of MindStream Academy. " We focus on teenagers between the ages of 13-18 because we want to create life-long change for those teens during their most formidable years. These are the ideal years to instill positive habits that can be sustained throughout their lives. As a wonderful introduction to the MindStream philosophy of health and wellness, we are offering a summer program with a minimum stay of four weeks. However, students are welcome to remain in our care for however long they or their family feel is needed. We are proud to be able to offer an exclusive opportunity for ObesityHelp.com Members to apply for the first in a series of scholarships that we will be offering."
About MindStream Academy
Teens attending MindStream Academy are involved in a wide range of outdoor activities including:
•Swimming
•Kayaking
•Team Sports
•Martial Arts
•Yoga
•Equine Activities
•Gardening
•Biking
•Hiking
Teens also experience real-life activities such as cooking classes and learning how to make healthy choices at restaurants and grocery stores. With so many different programs available for either group or self-directed interests, a day can be enhanced with creative writing, Zumba, animal care, and various fun field trips. Alongside all of these activities, the academy is a fully accredited academic institution focused on getting students ahead or getting them caught up in school while they get fit.
The academy has recently been joined by the season 10 Biggest Loser winner, Patrick House. House moved to South Carolina where the academy is located and works as a spokesperson and fitness coach after his successful weight loss. His struggles with weight loss prior to the show have made him a wonderful role model for the students as he works side-by-side with the students to address their own particular issues.
“Family involvement is the most critical key to our student’s success.? says Ray Travaglione. “Alongside the one-year continuum of care that we provide, students, counselors and families meet weekly (via Skype or telephone) for counseling sessions. The family has to actively participate in the MindStream program, including our family workshops where parents and families visit the school to see first-hand the progress their child has made.?

We actually just profiled them on our blog - we think they're brilliant! I work for Rhythm, Rhyme, Results (www.educationalrap.com) and we're writing some new raps to deal with childhood obesity. We've been collaborating with Dr. Katz, who's been a great resource and he had filled us in on MindStream - they are WONDERFUL! :)
