Not all seniors are Senile

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side.

He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The old man said, "No, I'd like to see something more special."

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000" the jeweler said.

The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, "by check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, the jeweler phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account."

"I know," said the old man, "But let me tell you about my weekend!"

This joke is based on a real story that happened in Neiman-Marcus.  Stanley Marcus wrote about it in his book, Minding the Store.    The difference was that it was a mink coat, a young man, and an exceptionally good looking blonde woman.  Stanley Marcus thought it was one of the most interesting things that happened while he ran NM downtown in Dallas.  If you have never been to the original NM in downtown Dallas, you have missed  a treat.  It is very different from the stores in other places.  My cousin use to work there, and a friend's mother was a personal buyer at NM for years.  There are a lot of stories about all kinds of celebrities and public figures that abound from the old days.  I still love to go to the designer floor to see the clothes there.  And the shoppers are almost as interesing as the stock.  I have been to the one in Atlanta, but that is definitely not the same.  And even the NM in Ft.Worth, Tx. is not like the NM in Dallas.  I guess it is like going to Macy's in New York is not like going to Macy"s in Birmingham.  I have been to both, and they just don't compare.  For one thing, Birmingham doesn't have a wooden escalator.  You can get the same products, but the stores have their own mystic.
