Hello, everyone! I am exactly 6 weeks post op today. Is it weird that I can barely get down an ounce of really soft chicken, but can get down a half cup of beans which is 4 ounces? I'm still in my soft food stage and am still not eating anything other than protein. I unfortunately am still doing protein shakes for breakfast as I can't get anything else down in the morning. I start "regular" food on the 25th and am still struggling with getting things down.

I believe you are doing fine.  My choice of protein was eggs because it was soft.  I just took in what I could and as long as I was getting in enough protein and liquids to feel good I didn't worry.  I am one who didn't mind protein drinks,  I still can do them.  I had the premier protein ready-made shakes from Costco, in the first months following surgery, and now I do a whey protein shake to do meal replacement in the morning and sometimes dinner if it gets late.

I don't know if any of this is helpful but that is how I roll.

I really think you are doing well.  As long as you focus on YOU ... you're going to do fine.

Welcome to our world and keep up the great work.

Carbs are called "slider foods" because they don't stick around in our stomachs the way dense proteins do. You will always be able to eat more beans than chicken (by volume).

How much food have you been cleared to eat? At 6 weeks out, you will feel no restriction and it's entirely possible to eat too much-- and damage your still-healing insides. 4oz is WAY too much.

Thanks for your reply. I was told to get in 3 oz of dense protein per meal. So I am eating to much as far as the beans?

3oz dense protein is a LOT of food. Even at 3.5 years out, I can barely eat more than 3oz in a sitting! Be careful and don't push yourself.

Definitely eating too much on the beans. I'd say stick to 1oz at a go for now? Might be worth calling your doctor's office to clarify.

I found I could only eat about an ounce to 1.5 ounces per meal when I started solids.  My NUT said that my tummy was swollen, and that the swelling usually goes down by week 7.  And that's what happened for me.  In week 7, my capacity started increasing.

Its not surprising that you can eat more beans because they don't cause the pyloric valve to close like dense protein does.  The beans pass thru the tummy quickly.

You should see an improvement soon.  hang in there.

No matter how soft meat, chicken, fish, etc. is, it's still dence protein, and is more filling. I'm just over 7 months out from vsg and I can only eat 1.5 ounces of protein at a time, 2 ounces makes me feel uncomfortable. I can eat much more when I eat beans, cottage cheese, string cheese, stuff like that. I just eat my portion slowly and enjoy it, and it allows me to eat more times per day and stay satisfied. It's normal.
