May We Never Forget

Que, you are right.  It's a day for prayer and remembering.

When we got the news that President Kennedy had been shot I was in 4th grade math class.  That's one of those moments that is frozen in time in my mind.  It's the first time I understood the importance of being an American and the orderly transition of power.

When the Challenger space shuttle exploded, I was at work.  My mom called to tell me the news.  My kids were in elementary school.  This had a much more profound impact on them than it did on me.

When the Columbia disintegrated on re-entry, we were watching Saturday morning television and packing to take our first cruise out of Galveston.  On the way to the ship, we drove right in front of NASA and saw all of the reporters and news crews that were surrounding the space center.

On September 11, 2001 I had the day off from work.  I turned on the television in the bedroom and was lying in bed watching the Today Show.  They showed the first kind of long-distance shots of a fire in the first tower.  While they were showing it, the second plane hit the second tower.  I remember the disbelief in Matt Lauer's voice as they replayed the video.  My kids were both away from home at college.  I frantically tried to call them all day.  It felt urgent that I talk to both of them.   I think this day had the most impact on me.  I have never felt anything that made me so profoundly sad for such a long period of time.  It truly changed me as much as it changed our country.  We must never forget how fragile and precious our way of life is.

and one year ago today I was driving to Allen to crash in on my sistah Annette and her family with my dog pack.

9-11 and all those other events you named will always be etched in my mind.

We should always remember and never forget!

On 9/11 I was hurrying because I was late to work and they broke into the morning news. I fell to my knees in front of the TV and all I could remember is being on Liberty Island with Aunt Phyllis the month before and her pointing to the north tower and her saying 'I work at the one with all the antennas on top' I called her office, cell and home...and of course there was no answer.
