Rachel, We actually did a Washington DC trip a few years ago in late July. We stayed outside of DC, but close to a metro station. We drove there to save money and just about everything we did was free. We let our congressman know and got the passes for the white house tour and senate stuff. It was great. We splurged some on food, but the trips was really affordable. I think I got our room on travelocity.com. I just kept checking daily and made the reservation when it was cheap one day. I'm jealous. Hey Rachel If you are looking to go to Washington you can always stay outside of Washington. I go every summer and stay with a friend. She used to live in Fredericksburg. We would drive in to DC. It is about an hour out if DC. There are tons of historical sites in Fredericksburg as well. The hotel rates are not expensive there. Hope this helps! If not...refer to Kathy's post...that would be my next suggestion!!!!! Melissa

Hey Rachel! I grew up in Baltimore, MD. (Just 45 min. north of DC), and if you stay a little outside of DC, it should be affordable. The museums are free, and you could spend days there and still not see everything. Make sure you can drive to the tram/train station because parking stinks. They also have bus tours that you can take so you can get the "lay of the land." Really the food is the most expensive thing. (But since we aren't eating much . . . . ha ha) If you really want history, and stay in that general area; Drive from SC, up the Shenandoa Valley to DC, there are many civil war battlefields, caverns to explore with the kids, (your kids could learn what about stalagtites and stalagmites), and the hotels are very reasonable through Virginia. If DC gets too hectic, take a hour trip to the Inner Harbor of Baltimore. They have a great Revolutionary War ship you can tour, and during the summer the town would be hoppin! If you like Baseball, there is the Orioles Camden Yards, (which I think is the most beautiful park in the country). "No I am not biased" When I go home to see family, that is the way we drive, and it is a beautiful drive. Hope this helps! Terri
