I'm a nut for Krispy Kreme!!!
I was so upset and thought that after surgery I would never be able to eat another donut in my life. I was already mourning the loss. However, I went online to Krispy Kreme's website and looked up the nutritional information on donuts....drumroll please......
The original glazed donut has 10g of sugar and 2.5g of protein in one. I know this isnt great and I know it can't be an everyday kind of thing but at least it is a once a year kind of thing or on special occasions! I can have something with less than 10g of sugar right? I could have half and only have 5g.
I was sharing this information with my husband and he said "you still are centering you life around food." I know that I am but I can't just break 27 years of food being the center of my life!!!
Just wanted to share!
Rachel
Rachel, you are so silly!!
Prior to surgery, I was probably eating anywhere from 1 to 4-5 doughnuts a day. Geez, writing that sounds like a lot....but didn't seem that way when you are around them all day!! And I was a krispy kreme addict even before I started working there. But let me tell you that when the pounds start melting away, you won't want to sabatoge your efforts with a doughnut (don't let my boss hear me talking you out of buying doughnuts!!!). To me, eating a doughnut is a lose, lose situation. I will either dump (which I haven't dumped at all yet), or I won't (and instead of 1 bite, the next one will be 2 bites, then a whole doughnut, then 2 doughnuts/while stretching my pouch!!!) And besides that I definitely satisfy my sweet tooth with a sugar free fudgsicle or a chocolate power crunch bar. There are things that we can eat that will satisfy and won't harm our weight loss. And yes, you will probably still center your life around food (what can you eat, and what can you not eat), but in a more healthy way!!
Well......I got to go "make the doughnuts"!!
Hugs,
Dianne

of course you center your life around food. that is why you are having the surgery. we are food addicts!! i will say this my friend, you may not WANT a donut after surgery. the whole thing changes you completely. there are many foods i thought i couldn't live without only to find that i don't want them anymore. don't worry about after surgery yet. all of it will come.
Let me preface this by saying that I understnad the dread of going out with things that you love to eat after surgery .. I am sure we all go through that. i know I did. That said, even though that doesn't sound like a lot of sugar that is actually quite a bit. anything over 2-3 grams and I am a gonner.
And there are sooo many things out there with a heck of a lot more protein than 2.5 grams, and how many calories are you going to be getting out of that one donut.. prolly a lot more than you woud like. The whole point to this is to learn a whole new way of eating and how to make the "correct" food choices.
Besides with the small amout of food that you will be able to get in after surgery, that donut won't seem that big a deal after all you will be too busy trying to get in all your protein and fluids to waste precious pouch space on junk.
And as others have said,, there is a VERY good chance that after surgery you won't even want any sweets. as most on here can attest to, thing taste completely different afterwards.
Example. after my swallow they brought me fruit juices, apple, pineapple and grape. Now I am a fruit juice junky and used to be able to drink TONS of it. Well the only one I could even remotely tolerate was the pineapple cause the other two literally tasted like syrup.. they were WAY too sweet. YUCK.
I can't even tolerate the thought of chocolate any longer and I used to be a massive chocoholic. I can't even stomache chocolate protein drinks.
I know that this post may have sounded harsh and I don't mean it that way at all I just don't want you to chance making yourself really ill by thining you can have something that you really in all probability can't, and in all honestly shouldn't. Trust me if I could hve avoided my first dump I would have.. NOT a fun experience. I was in pain for HOURS!!
Ah, do I ever understand! I actually started crying at the State Fair last year because I was thinking "I won't have cotton candy again!"
And I couldn't imagine being satisfied with one bite of something, either. I love chocolate, I love cake, I love cookies.... The list goes on and on.
However, I have dumped, three times now, and not from eating cakes or sweets. Dumping is BAD. It's happened twice at work, and I couldn't go home, and BOY did it make for a bad day! Just miserable! And that experience has made me REALLY careful about what I eat.
Rachel, plan on trying the three bite rule -- you can have three bites of anything you want. At first, when your pouch is so tiny, one bite will do it. And I AM satisfied with one to three bites of something, to my utter amazement.
But the most important thing is I'M NOT GOING TO PU****!!! If I've gone through all this -- the hoops to jump through before surgery, major surgery itself, the recovery, the cost, EVERYTHING -- I'm not going to let myself eat again as I did before. As the doctors say over and over, the surgery is only a tool. It's a powerful one, but it's just a tool. You can and will re-gain every pound you lost and more if you don't follow the rules. You can probably eat a doughnut. And after your body adjusts, you can probably eat two doughnuts, and after a while, three. And you'll gain the weight back.

Dear Rachel
Most of what you're feeling is the fear of the unknown
- how your life will change after surgery. And that's just normal. It's hard to wait once you've made your decision to do this and all kinds of things go through your mind.
The waiting is by far the hardest part of the whole process. All I can tell you is that once you get to the "losing side" your priorities and tastes will change. The dreaded "dumping" will become your greatest ally in your quest for your goal. Everyone should do it once, because you will NEVER want to do it again.
You are going to be so relieved.
I think we all mourned our favorite foods and worried that we couldn't live without them. I stuffed myself before my surgery, saying goodbye to all my friends. I was so sad.
Now, I couldn't care less.
I was just on a vacation where unlimited gorgeous desserts and breads, well, just great food - was served, and I was happy to stick to my protein and vegetables. I didn't want even a taste of any of it. Rachel, it's true. Your tastes will change!
I only wish I could have had my surgery at your age! Watch out , Girl!
You're going to be VERY fertile after your surgery, and you're not supposed to get pregnant for awhile. You may be craving pickles instead of donuts!
Love, B
